I remember a cardboard box full of 10” 78s as a lad. My parents had quite a few. They’ve got a lot to do with my abiding love of records and music, I suspect.
You've made me dig out my family toy.
Pre-Technics direct drive, variable speed.
From the time when a stylus really was a needle (not sure why we needed so many - when it was really only the records that wore out):

Wow! I think steel needles didn’t last very long at all, but I guess they were better than ‘thorn’ needles, was it?

An aunt had something like that, but my parents had a trendy Acos ceramic with presumably sapphire tipped turnover stylus!

I feel pain for the records.
Am i exaggerating or did these systems really damage the media?
