I bought my Philips Essence and what a racket!

Well,

Following much deliberation and reading the rave review from my favourite HiFi/AV mag, I finally splashed out on the Philips Essence TV.

What can I say - stonking picture, deep blacks and for my money actually better than most Panasonic plasmas I've seen.

So all fine then? Well No!

The media hub makes one hell of a racket. It whirrs as if there's a heavy handed cooling fan at play and hums away so loudly you can hear it over speech programmes such as the News.

I've even out it put of sight (and one hoped earshot) in a BDI cabinet and still the noise goes on. In fact it's louder than my old Humax Freeview PVR and the humming makes it worse than any fan noise I've ever encountered.

Is this to be expected or am I unlucky?

Anyone recall whether the review model had this problem?

Your experience is very different to ours - noise from the hub was never an issue. I'd go back to your supplier and see about an exchange.

So you're saying it was pretty much silent then Simon?

At the price they're charging I certainly wouldn't expect any perceptible noise.

Our media hub didn't make any noticeable noise when the screen was idling, let alone when the speakers were making a sound. If we had, you can be sure we'd have mentioned it - as you say, at the price it needs to be quiet.

Hi,

Perhaps the cabinet is the problem? Is there enough air able to circulate around the unit?

You may already have had it sitting out in the open and it's just as noisy - if that's the case, report the problem and see about an exchange.

Cheers,

Cofnchtr.

Thanks for your input Cofnchtr,

I understand where you are coming from, but BDI have specifically desigend their cabinets to provide sufficient airflow and the unit is equally noisy whatever you do with it!

Most odd.....
