How will PS3 work as a PVR?

Can somebody explain to me how the PS3 will operate as a PVR when this rumoured firmware update is made available?

Has the machine currently got a tuner - analogue or digital? How will it receive a signal without an aerial connection on the back?

Apologies if these are stupid questions!

AFAIK, the plan is to launch a firmware upgrade at some point next year and offer a plug-in tuner module, which will enable the PS3 to function as a PVR.

I see. So that would mean purchasing an extra little piece of hardware then. Is there an expansion bay built into the machine for that, or would this be an external device?
