I am gonna for getting the poweramp. I had similar thoughts with my setup. The cyrus 8vs just wasnt enough for the quad 12ls at high volume. Adding an 8 power, helped to sharpen things up again and gave the bass a bit more weight.

I bet that the sound is not becoming brighter as it gets louder, it is just losing some its clarity and becomes a little painful. At least this is what I experienced. The fact that it is good at lower volume supports my claim.

Hi sorry to take a different tack sounds like clipping turn volume down buy a more powerfull amp, cable may mask the effect but one day you will fry the tweeters. Most budget amps deliver most of their power low down giving the impression of being able to go louder "ulisten how loud my amp is and not at halfway" but it wont go any louder just sounds more distorted which the ear perceives as being louder because of the high levels of odd numbers harmonics.

In my experience most amps are made like this try some input attenuators to lower the input level and try again but is does sound like a clipping issue sorry to say.
