Hi guys,

Can anyone help me how in the world do I need to make mine PS3 can transfer Dolby True HD via HDMI to Onkyo 606? It has been 2 months now all I can get normal Dolby Digital indicated at my receiver..why is that? Mine PS3 was upgraded to 2.41 recently but I still don't understand why?

Anyone helpful infos how to is welcome and appreciate.

Have you switched your audio settings from bitstream to Linear PCM? You'll need to do this to receive Dolby True HD or DTS HD AFAIK.

Absolutely. Worth adding, though, that in theory this doesn't necessarily mean you lose out. Make sure your PS3 is running the very latest firmware, and set it to output multichannel LPCM: it will then decode (unzip) Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio onboard before outputting it to your Onkyo in LPCM form. It will also, of course, stream LPCM soundtracks as found on many Blu-ray discs.ÿ

I tend to switch between LPCM and bitstream depending on what I'm watching. I switch to bitstream when I'm watching SD-DVDs. It's actually really easy to do whilst you're watching a film. You just press select to bring up the controls and go into AV setup (I think that's what it's called off the top of my head). I switch back to LPCM when watching Blu-Ray in order to get HD sound.

Great tip Fuzzy, I didn't realise you could do this - though you need to press the triangle button to get the options I think rather than Select, even on the proper PS3 remote I think?

I'm thinking of getting either the Onkyo 606 or Denon AVR 1909 to hook up with my PS3

I've heard of problems between the 606 and PS3 (a loud hum when at 1080p and 7.1 audio) - What set-up have you got and have you had any problems between your 606 & PS3?

Thanks

This is the problem for me in that people start buying these new machines which are supposed to be the bees knees and they are having issues when connecting them up to other equipment, i am very green when it come to all this stuff, initially i thought the Sony STR 820 would go well with a PS3 / Sky HD then someone had issues with SKY HD and the Sony getting 5.1 sound, then thought maybe the 606 will do it, now people saying there are buzzing noises, only upscales to 1080i, not so good with music etc, so now i am thinking the Denon 1909 but not many have that, and when they do i am sure they will find issues with that. For someone like me that just wants a good pic and good sound, the more i read the more i get confused as to what to buy.

I have to say, it's not completely clear in this thread, but you should see Multichannel on the amp if everything is working correctly. This is because of what the guys have said above i.e. the PS3 is decoding the signal, not the amp. If the PS3 is showing it's outputting TrueHD, you have it set to output Linear PCM as indicated above and the amp says Multichannel, then everything is working as it should.
