Seems strange you're getting Multich displayed when you select Bitstream as it should be the other way round. Basically, you should have the PS3 set to Linear PCM and your 905 should then show Multich. You will never see Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master Audio come up on the amp with the PS3 as it's unable to bitstream the native signals out. Instead it decodes them onboard to PCM and then sends them to the amp. The amp displays Multich as it is receiving it in Multichannel PCM format - it had no idea it was encoded in Dolby TrueHD before, so it can't light this up. This is nothing to be concerned about, you're still getting the HD audio format.
A quick press on the Select button while the Blu-Ray is playing will confirm the format which the PS3 is decoding (in the top right hand corner).

I have the same question, for Sony S550. Because I have the NAD T775, which accepts LPCM but does not decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA, is setting the S550 to "Direct" enough?ÿ

for yours johnny allow the s550 decode the formats onboard and output the sound via the multichannel analogues which in turn need to be connected to your amp, i believe this is the only way round it as iirc the sony strda 1200 doesn't accept hdmi audio. connection via the multi-channel analogues will get you the hd audio your after

And those for those of us who have a receiver capable of accepting LPCM? I know this question has been asked before, I just can't seem to get a definite answer. As far as I understand setting the S550 to "Direct" makes it output the sound as bitstream. But what about LPCM?

whatever has been posted here, you are clearly not getting HD as your amp is saying "Dolby" when on PCM.

My Onkyo would not do as I expected when I first had it. In the end, I had to manually select the audio defaults on the machine itself.
Using the remote control wouldn't work, despite what it said on the onscreen display. Odd!

Simply, if you have the PS3 on PCM and your onk does not say "multichannel" then it isn't giving you HD.
The ONLY time I ever had the Onk saying Dolby when in this mode was when I watched Casino Royal, and I had to go back to the blu ray's top menu and select the HD sound as the film was in dolby 5.1 by default.

So... you are not getting HD if your Onk says anything but "multichannel".
YOU NEED: LPCM selected, the film playing in HD (as said, use select on the remote to check), and your Onkyo MUST display multichannel.

Ask again if you can't get ALL 3.
