House Music System Help Required

Hi All,

I have a set of Pionner decks in a medium sized room in my house. I mostly mix house music and quite loud ;-)

Started with a basic budget sound system set up comprising of Yamaha AS201 amp and Mission M33i speakers. However, I've outgrown these now and paricularly the speakers can't handle the bass and volume I want to get.

WHAT HI FI recommends these speakers as best under £500, do you guys think they would help me find that jump up in Bass and bit more volume that I desire?

Thanks in advance for advice!

Yep Pioneer mixer and max budget is £600 all in including sub/amp/speakers whatever you guys recommend...

Thanks!

Pair of Yamaha HS8 active speakers, about £400 new. You may not even need a sub but if you do, look for the BK XLS200, slightly over budget but worth it.

Thanks mate for that info!

my current m33i's are floorstanders. Those yamahas you recommend are just shelf speakers. Will they be loud enough? I thought floorstanders produce more noise/base because of their size?

Bass response looks pretty similar,

M33i - 48 Hz

HS8 - 46 Hz (probably best to ignore the official Yamaha figures which give bass at -10dB

Although there's a good chance the HS8 will have tighter, punchier bass which might feel like less bass if you are used to flabby bass that is a common end result in cheap floorstanders.

In terms of SPL the HS8 has 120w of amplification per channel without passive crossovers that suck some of the power away, so they should go plenty loud compared to your current speakers.

i used to DJ myself and listen to house and techno, i use a pair of Mission 733i's and they are well bassy! Soundstage is superb too. Too much bass for some poeples taste, and it can cloud the midrange slightly on a poor recording, but i love them with dance music. You can pick them up 2nd hand for £70!!! Mission 734's are even more bassy if you can find a pair! ......If you wanted better than them you would be forking out over a grand and talking KEF R500 territory in my opinion.

Just be carefult the polymer drivers arent cracked as they can go over time

If you are mixing music there is no better solution than studio monitors of course if you want to hear your mix at its best . (and best way for learning, practicing) You need flat detailed response from speakers . Yamahas would be on top of my list howewer you like electronic music have a look at Pioneer's active monitors they have been designed for electronic dance music .(later add a subbwoofer) Or if you really want floorstanding speakers and your neighbors are very tolerant go for small PA system for example Cerwin Vega ....

In terms of controlled volume, tight punchy bass the HS8s will blow away any of the other options mentioned in this thread.

Most hi-fi enthusiasts have never heard speakers of this type in domestic conditions so have no idea of the power, clarity and all round ability that they can give. The HS8 might not be the most sophisticated monitor for the money but when a bit of bass and power is required they take some beating.

They may be 'shelf' speakers in hi-fi terms but they are pretty big, an 8.5 inch woofer compared to the M33's 6 inch and plenty of power. If you have a music shop close by that has them, try and hear them, you will not be disappointed.

Guys thanks so much for these comments. Went into a few shops in London and tried some speakers out.

think I'm gonna go for 2x PA type speakers and one of the Yamaha HS8s.

seems like if I want to get some decent volume and bass I'm gonna need the bigger cones and power of an active speaker. This will give me the long throw I need to keep the music level loud in a room say with 10 people all talking.

then put the HS8 next to the decks as my short throw booth Speaker. This will give me the higher quality sound I need to hear the mix and levels.

how does this set up sound? Anymore tips?
