Home made speaker stands

Is it possible to build my own speaker stands for bookshelf speakers? I was thinking of welding the entire structure: ie. the bottom plate, main column and the top plate. I've read about internal resonance affecting the sound, will this come into play to drastically affect sound quality?

I would say that 70% was about getting the drivers to ear height and the rest is resonance etc. Try it and see. If they sound good then start up a new business. If they sound **** then hey you gave it a go!

I did build a pair this weekend and the outcome was really surprising.
I'm able to position them and the whole sound is less muddy; so I guess it was a good try.

Though, I can't be sure that my ears will be able to pick up all the subtle diferences compared to a good quality stand?
Maybe I'll buy a good set when I have a chance, but for the time being it's not bad at all.

If you're able to fill them with (dry!) sand and haven't done so, that might help further as it will deaden the structure. If you can do a mix of lead shot and sand even better as the extra weight will help too.

Sand from the early learning centre is good for filling stands as it has no lime. You can also get limeless sane from a builders merchant but you may have to dry it out before using it.
Also try making a wooden plinth for the stands to sit on. Light solid wood like oak is excellent. Try 20-25mm mdf first.
