Hey just got back into my music and downloaded some test tunes from linn and it was 1411kbps with amazing detail, so got the FLAC for creedance and that was 1411 as well.

Is this the highest bitrate you can get?

Thanks

If you've already been on Linn's website you should be able to find the 24-bit test samples which will be a much higher bitrate.

4608 on mine from Linn & HD Tracks - superb recordings! If the music suits your tastes.

AlmaataKZ:

The highest bit rates I get are:

24/96 ALAC - 3194 kbps

24/96 AIFF - 4608 kbps

24/192 AIFF - 9216 kbps

Were can I listen to some of that 24/192 AIFF?

you need the hi-rez file and something to play it on.

some sites sell 24.192 music (some albums on linn? hdtapetransfers? 2L?) but there is very very little around. there is a bit more of 24/96 and 24/88 (eg linn, naim, hdtracks, society of sound), which to me sounds as good. 24.96 is also better in terms of more hardware is capable of playing it back. e.g. not every optical output can do 24/192 and only goes to 24/96 or near bandwidth. some dacs also cannot do 24/192.

so, on balance there is no 'need' to try to get 192 files. 24/96, 24/88, 24/44 are all fine and have very high bit rates.

the problem is there is very little music available in hi rez and even in cd rez 16/44 as a download.

the only 9000ish kbps files I have are I think only from one disc. if you are interested - google for kent poon audio blog. he sells a cd+DVD combo of a jazz album called Audiophile Jazz Prologue Vol 3 or smth like that. 3 versions of the same album in the pack - CD, 24/96 files and 24/192 files. good if you want to compare the difference in quality for yourself, testing the sampling rate capabilities of kit etc.

I got 9216kbps from a DVD-Audio rip of REM's Best Of which is 24bit/192KHz. You can rip the MLP layer of DVD-Audio's using a free piece of software called DVD-Audio Explorer. This will rip the MLP files to WAV and I then convert them to FLAC. I keep the DVD-A discs just for 5.1 playback, but play the FLAC stereo 24/96 files from my PC through my DAC which sounds better than the disc. The REM files being 192KHz get passed through my DAC direct to my Z7, the DacMagic only accepts up to 96KHz. 192KHz stereo FLAC files seem to reach the Z7 intact via coax SPDIF.

You can use DVD Audio Extractor (free for 30 days) to get 2ch LPCM off DVD's. Most of these will be 16bit/48kHz, but a noticeable improvement nonetheless. But some, e.g. Depeche Mode Collectors Editions have 24bit/48kHz tracks. DVD Audio Extractor will convert them direct to FLAC files, you just have to tag them.
