Hiding a subwoofer

I own a Sony DAV-IS10 which has a fairly meaty subwoofer. Having read the manual (this time!), its very clear about not placing it in something or having anything above it. It's also fairly limiting as to where it can go in relation to the control unit as there is a relatively short cable to link the two. So I've had to put it in the corner of the living room where it is not hidden by anything [just to put this into perspective this part of the living room currently has nothing on the floor except for a wall mounted TV and Sat box/control unit.

The wife has decided that she doesn't like it there as it looks "cheap" and "tacky" <sigh>. Has anybody got any neat suggestions for hiding the subwoofer away or for placement where it will be so obvious (I'm guessing that that is very limited as nothing can be above it).

Now thinking about moving the subwoofer to the back of the room. Is this likely to affect things as the manual is fairly clear about placing near the TV.
