I am looking for advice on a possible set up. At the moment I have a 9 year old Sony Trinitron t.v. and am very happy with it. (it has 2 scart inputs on the back and s video inputs on the front - when the time comes I will invest in the newer technology). Also I have a Sony rdr-hx725 DVD/hd recorder a Sony dvp-ns705vcd/dvd/sacd player and a wii (all through a scart switching box) the other scart in to the t.v. has our sky+ box. The sky + box is also connected to the recorder to copy stuff to d.v.d. if needed.

I really want to play my sacd’s through a 5.1 system and also utilise my sky + and d.v.d.s through it as well, and after reading reviews I am looking at the Sony strdh800 and a set of Q acoustics 2000 speakers. My questions are will all the existing kit be able to be connected to the a.v. receiver. And what will be the best way of connecting the receiver to the t.v. as there are no HDMI inputs on it.

Sorry if that is a bit long winded. Any advice welcome thanks Gary

hey dude,

  • I have just got the Sony strdh800. av amp......I think it's an excellent choise. I coudn't be more happy with mine. The sound quality is very good and the surround processing is excellent. very easy to use! very good value for money .
  • You can probably connect the tv's audio via analogue phono to the av amp.
  • does the tv have and digital audio outputs
  • I think your existing kit should connect fine if they have analogue outputs and if any of them have digital outputs then the sony av amp has two optical inputs and 1 coaxial digital input.
  • The Sony rdr-hx725 DVD/hd has a digital coaxial out so thats good!
  • Sony dvp-ns705vcd/dvd/sacd has digital optical out so thats good!

hope this helps dude,,,

matt

Can you actually send a SACD output down an optical or coax output?

Nope. Basically you'll be able to connect the audio from all your components through the STR-DH800 except the multichannel audio output from your SACDs, but you'll still have to connect the video from the various components direct to your TV.

If you want to buy a Sony amp and you want to play your SACDs in multichannel, your best bet it to look for an STR-DA1200ES, which has the multichannel analogue inputs the DH800 lacks, and connect from the DVP-NS705V to the amp using three pairs of analogue connections between the player's multichannel analogue out and the matching connections on the amp.

The 1200 will also work with your other components as I have described above.

You can find the STR-DA1200ES for £300-350 with minimal googlage.

Andrew Everard:Nope. Same kind of system, different amp.

Andrew thanks for that..a few last thing's. As and when my t.v. gives up the ghost i will look at h.d. tv and sky hd with this amp be ok with that. And what are the best ways of conecting all the above together.

Connected as currently until you get HD TV/Sky + HD, at which point the Sky HD box can either be connected to the amp and then on to the TV via HDMI, or directly to the TV using HDMI, in either case with a separate digital audio feed to the amp as Sky currently only sends stereo over HDMI, and you need a digital audio hook-up for. 5.1.

Thanks Andrew, confirmed what I thought, but I was not 100% sure.

I have been pondering this over the weekend. I have been "googling" but it looks as though most retailers have discontinued the STR-DA1200ES. i did find it in stock at play.com for £280.00 however is there anything else around my price range £300 by any other manufacturer that may be worth considering.

thanks in advance
