what is the display on your onkyo saying when you play either bluray or hd disc?

Toshiba EP30 won't output true HD sound - for that you need to have bought the EP35 - and IIRC neither does the Samsung. Instead you get Linear PCM or 5.1-channel analogue output, either of which the Onkyo can handle and give you excellent HD sound.

thanxs for the info

checking the spec of the samsung bd-p1400 it says that it has all the hi-def decoders on board so should the onkyo decodes these and light up accordingly??? kinda new to all this stuff and if not then i really dont have a hi-def system???(very confused consumer at the mo)

No, it decodes them, and then outputs them in Linear PCM or analogue audio. LPCM sounds just as good as a native bitstream of the Dolby/DTS HD soundtrack, all things being equal, and it makes some sense for such soundtracks to be 'unzipped' in the player then output to the receiver, rather than transmitted to the receiver for decoding.
