Hi there in Dec 2009 i was about to upgrade my system to Monitor Audio RX6 AV package & Pioneer LX-82 but had a nightmere with my heating system packing up so i had to use the money to get a new heating system!

So now i am going to have to upgrade one item at a time due to lack of funds! so my question is what order would others upgrade my system based on my current budget system?

My current System is:-

Philips 37pf9830/10 - 4 years old its a great quality TV but its only 1080i max output

Sony 1200es Receiver - very basic receiver which does not pass HDMI audio and only has 2 HDMI inputs

KEF 2005.2 5.1 speaker system - a good little performer but i am ready for the next stage!

PS3 Fat - I use mainly as a blu-ray player but occasionally use it for gaming

APPLE TV - i will keep this!

My ideal system would be:-

Philips 46 9704

Pioneer LX82 Receiver

Monitor Audio RX6 AV package

Oppo 835 blu ray player

I would welcome comments on what people feel i should replace first and what out of my budget system can be kept for a while!

Or my other option would be to wait and see what 3D brings over the next few months as my ideal system could then include 3D TV, Receiver and Blu-ray player.

Thanks in advance

Andy

Upgrading the TV would have the greatest immediate impact due to its size.

Next get a Bluray player with on board decoding and 5.1 analogue outs which would give you HD sound with your existing amp.

The others can follow, but as your budget is tight, these two items will give you the largest overall improvement. The PSP fat probably wont last much longer anyway.

Hope this helps.

hi andy

with the introduction of 3d tv's and receivers i would be inclined to get the Monitor Audio RX6 AV package first and then look at getting the other kit,

im sure once 3d hits the stores it will lower the price of the tv and receiver you want and you could save enough on those 2 alone to get the blu-ray player you want.

Thanks for the tips!

My current TV is a Philips 37PF9830/10 which was a 5 star TV when it came out 4 years ago and i paid £1800 for it. I will need to sell this and use the money to update my TV but does anybody have an idea of what sort of price i should be looking for? Its in fantastic condition with no visable marks and i would say has been used approx 3 hours per day over the past 4 years since i bought it.

Regards

Andy

Thinking about it i am probably wise to change the speakers to the monitor audio first as TV's, Blu-Ray, Receivers are all going to change big time throughout this year with 3D etc where as the speakers should be pretty safe bet!

I agree that the speakers won't be affected by 3d technology, but will your current amp run them ok, also it may be awhile before you find the correct amp to go with the speakers, and that would be frustraing for me, another factor there may well be more speaker options around, and you would not be able to change your mind. The problem with blu-ray players the current ones do not support 3d where the PS3 will with an upgrade. You could upgrade to a budget player that will be able to give you HD audio, for the time being giving you an improvement on sound. Or wait thats what im going to do as i think 3d hasn't even hit the streets yet and know one knows for sure how it will be received. It's tricky times for us all unless your not bothered about 3d, and i feel unless you have a pj or very large screen then you want be immersed in it.

The sad answer is "as much as someone is prepared to pay"! I'd take a look on ebay and see if anyone else is selling one and, if so, how much. The other route is your local paper, but the buyers won't be particularly discriminating - I imagine HD ready TVs of a certain screen size go for similar prices.

Don't even consider the options for 3D. Believe me it will never catch on. People willl not be prepared to sit in front of a TV sometimes wearing special glasses when a 3D feature is being shown and then losing them down the side of the sofa when an ordinary 2D programm is on.

Thinking about the price for your old telly. If you consider you can buy a brand new 1080p 50" telly for £600 or a 42" for £400 then it kind of puts the price of a 4year old 37" into perspective. It doesn't really matter how much it cost new either as the technology has improved so much that the new one probably outperforms the old one anyway.

If I was in the market for a used telly I wouldn't want to pay more than £200. If it was me I would give it to family or put it in another room.

I would upgrade the speakers first as their price will probably be unaffected by the 3D thing (if it does actually catch on). It's true that the amp will hold them back a bit but at least you'll know you are getting the best out of your amp for a bit.

Why should i not consider 3D? I am in the market for a complete new system over the next 12 months and so far all the prices for 3D equipment is very similar to non 3D equipment so if the performance is as good why not get 3D compatiable stuff?

You will almost certainly be left with some very expensive electronic junk. Just remember that those who are the first to adopt new technology pay top price, and if it fails to catch on, nobody is going to give you a refund.

So what? If 3D doesn't catch on you just stick the glasses in a drawer and carry on watching 2D through your 2D-compatible blu-ray, amp and TV. What's the big deal?

plus , if you demo 3d , and like it , you can always throw on a 3d bluray when your in the mood , wether it catches on or not , (if of course there are ever any 3d blurays released

I really do not understand your point?

If 3D fails i still have a top notch receiver/TV/Blu-ray player which can be used for 2D HD viewing! so why not just get 3D ready stuff which costs exactly the same and if 3D takes off then great but if not i still have a great system.
