Help With set up please

Hi All- hope you may be able to help me with set up

I have

Virgin Tivo Box, Cheap DVD Player, Onkyo Amp, and Lg49UF770V

What I want to achive is

Be able to just have sound from TV (so when just watching news etc) then when watching a Movie of Documentry switch Amp on.

Hello, I think the simplest way of connecting your system is to plug the DVD player and Virgin box (using HDMIs) into the TV, and then take an optical output from your TV to the Onkyo amp. When you want to listen to the TV speakers just keep your Onkyo turned-off. When you want to listen to the Onkyo, just turn down the TV volume.
