Hi all, I'd really appreciate your help in deciding on a hifi system.

My budget is up to about £500 and this is what I'm looking to achieve in order of preference from vital to 'would be nice'. I have a medium sized living room where I want to listen to music and also where the TV is. I don't really have any sound system at the moment.

Want:

- To listen to Spotify Premium and MP3s controlled by (or streamed from) iPhone & laptop.

- Good quality, room filling sound if possible.

Nice to have:

- Use it to improve TV sound with a line-in (to help justify the cost!)

- DVD/Bluray player... (although we mostly watch iPlayer)

Not bothered by/interested in:

- multi room setup

- playing CDs or radio

- B&W Zeppelin as it won't look good in my sitting room.

- not worried about a slightly taxing setup.

I am considering:

- Sonos 5 x 1 or Sonos 3 x 2

- rCube (seems very old?)

- Some kind of sound bar with a DVD player in the woofer. Space is at a premium in my house.

- Onkyo + speakers (I don't know which)

- WD Live plus another hifi system (but I need to be able to control it without turning the TV on)

- Something I haven't heard of yet

- And maybe even a Raspberry Pi or old laptop...

Many many thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome to the forum.

A mate replaced his home cinema/hifi system with some Mackie MR8 Mk2 active speakers, which he also uses to play music via his laptop through. The sound is phenominal and they cost about £200 each. They tend to be sold spearately as they are studio monitors, but don't let you think that measn they cannot be used for a home hifi.

Hi - and thanks. Maybe that's the best solution. Although I'll still need some kind of receiver won't I?
