Experiment with different things between your speakers and the stand.Spikes with give very tight fast sound but blue tac a warmer softer sound and rubber tap washers a halfway house between the 2.

Interesting!
The floor is concrete with carpet over and I use spikes currently but the stands are unfilled.
The Quads sit on bluetack.....

If the stands can be filled then i recommend you do this as it will add weight and body to the sound.I even filled my equipment rack with sand.Just make sure its fully dry.

Take a look here, a easy tweak with Blue tack on your speakers.
Worth a try?

Not sure I want to take the speakers apart just yet, but i'm going to fill the stands with sand to remove any ringing.

Speaker cables may also be upgraded - just in case 🙂
I'm thinking of QED Silver Anniversary XT with airlocks or Chord carnival.
Probably wont bi-wire, so i'll make some nice jumpers up.

Quick, further question:
Is it worth getting the Audiolab serviced or the Caps upgraded/replaced? After 20-odd years its bound to loose some of its quality is it not?

Bi wiring might take some of the stress out of the music.

Would certainly try as well putting a thin line of Blue Tack in between the tweeter and the cabinet.

The early audiolabs did sound grey and clinical so i don't thing a service and new caps will change its character so afraid if you dont like the sound then a change of amp is called for.

Thanks, that's kind of what I wanted to hear 🙂
It is an early one too, B serial I think....

So, i'm asking myself if I imagined the whole thing?

I'm sat here listening to Stevie Wonder's Definitive Collection (Universal), boy what an album - 120 minutes of absolute joy! Anyway, it doesn't sound harsh or agressive at all, its smooth, very clear but above all its REALLY musical 🙂

The Ausiolab has gotten right to the soul of the music and really knows how to groove.

But - lets remember this recording is at least 30 years old (some tracks are 40+) so its hardly going to be hard edged is it. But still, maybe that's the Audiolab's niche? Bringing old, truely-analogue music alive!

Maybe I should get a Rega Planar 3 and do some testing 🙂

I,ve got an Audiolab 8000A from the 80s and yours like mine needs replacing. You've had some good advice from a lot of knowlegable people on here which I think you need to take and move on.

I'll try and explain my previous answer
When you first posted this thread I thought the speakers will be the problem as Arcam is warm and Audiolab is neutral (or so I thought).
However last weekend I borrowed Marantz PM7200 KI Sig and it was a definite step up. I used the amp in Class A/B mode as AE said I could damage my speakers in Class A mode if driven hard. The difference was that shoving 95 watts up my speakers I realised that I was not getting the loud and aggressive sound that you get from the Audiolab but a much more open and musical sound. The amp also allowed my speakers to reveal things that I had not heard before.
I am not suggesting that you add Marantz to the list of amps previously mentioned. I thought it was a bit too forward and bright for me but it has proved to me that amplifiers have moved on in 20 years. I had considered buying a Power amp and Bi-amping but my upgrade will be an amp from a different manufacture.

I hope Ken Ishiwata's feeling a bit smug tonight...!

i'm glad you decided to clarify that first note
