Hi all,

be warned, my post is going to offend your vast knowledge. No need to castigate me for making a million mistakes and not knowing the first thing about audio systems, it's clear and I'm admitting it a zillion times.

So, I wanted a CD player. Got the Denon 800ne. From what I seemed to understand I needed active speakers for that, so I typed that on a shop's site (in the Czech Republic, where I live and don't speak the language) and spotted the Audio Pro n26 speakers. I thought I was done.

Didn't work. Probably because the speakers turn out to be wireless whatnots.

First stupid question: is it possible to still use, somehow, those speakers with the Denon?

Next stupid thing I did when no sound was being heard is I bought an amplifier, the Yamaha A-S701. Because the Denon's manual told me to buy one. Nothing doing still.

The speakers are connected by those wires between themselves (i-e there's only one such cable), and only one speaker has a power source.

Second stupid question: if I buy one more such cable, could I connect the speakers to the amp as normal speakers are supposed to? In other words, can I get the Yamaha amp, the Denon cd-player and the frikkin Audio Pro speakers to work together or am I doomed? And if I am, I suspect the speakers have to go. So the last question is: what type of speakers will work with the Denon and the Yam?

Thanks in advance for keeping the condescension to yourselves but putting me on the right track because my CDs are going to play themselves, sadly.

Hi there.
Any chance of posting a photo of your active speaker's back panel? There must be some RCA connectors on it? (The same type of connector as there will be on the Denon CDP).

When you say wireless, you mean Bluetooth?
The wire between them will be connecting the amplifier in the powered one to the passive (unpowered) one - so getting another lead won't allow you to use them with the Yamaha amp.

Hi, thanks.

Sure, here it is (that's just one speaker, the other only has the golden thinggies for the cable, no power source socket or anything else).

I see where Gray is going but with your current equipment you don't need active speakers so I would urge you to sell them on.
I think you need a cable like this from audio out on the cdp ,twin phono to stereo minijack, to your speakers

Hi. What do I need with my current equipment? Asking because I have no clue. Any passive speaker would do? Or is there scope for making another blunder on my part?

Gray, just seen your edit. Ok, yes Bluetooth, you're right.

That's what it is then, one active and one passive speaker?! Phew.

And you're saying there's just no way they would work with the Denon player, with or without the amp, right?

a pair of passive speakers and cables would give you more choice in future setup

they should work with your denim but what are you going to do with the Yamaha?

Yes, that's what I was thinking: either I have to sell the amp or the speakers... And since the speakers are cheaper... Grr.

Ok, noted, so just 2 passive speakers, which will connect to my amp, correct? Don't want to **** up yet again.

That's it. Your current speaker will not work with both the Denon and the Yamaha.
You need to sell either the speakers or the Yamaha .
I would sell the speakers and but a cheapish pair of passive speakers and cables to attach these to the speaker connectors on the Yamaha. Connect Denon to Yamaha and your good to go.

Thanks Al ears, I've been all ears indeed.

2 cables like that? (just not 10m) By which I mean 2 cables with 2 wires sticking out at either end?

Yes, optical output from the Denon to optical input on the speakers.

No, you could easily use the Denon CDP into the 'AUX' input of your Audio Pro speakers, by using this type of lead:
(Better still, use an optical lead, as suggested by jj bomber above).
But as Al said, your Yamaha would then effectively be redundant.

Your Audio Pro are officially a pair of powered speakers, but you're right to say that one of them is effectively a passive speaker.
It would actually be a fairly easy job for someone to modify the other one to become another passive, which would allow you to connect them to the speaker outputs of your Yamaha amp, so avoiding the need to sell anything.

It's also easy enough to just use the above RCA to 3.5mm lead to connect from the record output of the Yamaha to the Aux input of the Audio Pro. The volume out of the Yamaha would be fixed (so controlled on the Audio Pro), but you'd be able to use the Yamaha as a preamp for a turntable if you've got one.

Gray, jjbomber and Al ears, thanks again for your help and understanding. I may have found a solution: the bluetooth speakers will be an upgrade to the portable one I used to use when projecting movies (BT to laptop). So all I need now is buy a set of passive speakers for the CD player and amp combo...

I have learnt a lot, so thanks again, but I hope never to have to ask for help with these again :flushed::cry::oops::giggle:. I knew hifi was a very specialised and technical domain, but really thought I'd be able to escape it :tongueclosed:.

The world of audio (and video) has become extremely diverse over the years. When I started with audio equipment you bought a record player, an amp and speakers. Later a cassette deck and tuner might be added, followed by a CD player in the mid to late 1980s.
I can fully understand that without some advice or background knowledge people end up with stuff that's not really what they need. There are now so many options that have been added to the mix.

Do demo Dali Spektor 2. Ideally, you'll wanna put them on stands. If they're gonna be on a desk or a shelf, the Spektor 1 might be better suited. Wharfedale Diamond speakers are aso worth looking into.
