I HAVE to ask about this 'headphone sockets'

I have not been using the headphone socket on my Yamaha receiver now for a few months, the reason being that no matter WHICH adapter I use, at times I can be sat their listening either to music or movie and all of a sudden, the sound is out there, not confined to my headphones ?

It wakes my wife, well it Was waking her and Had to affect the neighbours too... I'd imagine ? (though none have complained.)

I have used now , aorund seven or so different phono-adapters and as yet, None seem to Keep the sound just in my headphones ?

I should have said/added, now I just listen to things via the TV headphone socket.

Does anyone have a solution at all, all seven headphone adapters cannot surely be 'faulty' ?*sad*

You're right to think that 7 adaptors won't all be faulty!

What happens when you move the plug in the socket?

Yup, sounds like the switch inside the headphone socket (the one that disconnects the speakers when a headphone plug is inserted) is faulty.

Most times when I plug in there is what seems to sound like a 'switching' of sorts going on and off tbh ?

If the sound is already on say... and then I plug-in the headphones, it's sometimes as if the Amplifier and headphones don't know WHICH is to carry the sound and the sound will go back and forth a couple of times between them.

Spiny Norman, if it is indeed a faulty switch inside the amplifier (as you sound right), can it be easily fixed/replaced would you know ?

The clicking sound you hear from within the receiver is a relay, doing the switching between speakers and headphones.

The contact within the socket (that Spiny was talking about) triggers the relay. Of course, the relay should only be activated as the headphone plug is inserted or removed. A new headphone socket would (almost certainly) cure the problem.

Removing the old / fitting a new socket could be done by a monkey. But the accessibility of the socket PCB is more likely to determine the difficulty of the job (and how many peanuts the monkey will want)

Get an estimate first, but don't quote me on the monkey bit.
