Sky HD is both 720p and 1080i. It depends on the programme.

As to the HDMI cable - if you search this site you will see numerous debates about the worth of upgrading digital cables.

I personally believe there to be a benefit but it may be quite subtle (my wife and kids certainly deny any difference, whereas I 'feel' it is better!!)

plus I would leave the picture settings at 720p as a progressive image is better in my view than a interlace, most people can't tell the difference though. Use any gold plated cable and test a more expensive one against your current one and see if you can see any difference

The SkyHD boxes only use hdmi 1.1 connections anyway, so i wouldn't be looking for any cables with bells or whistles.

The standard cable is perfectly acceptable for use on the HD box.(not opening any worm cans here)

Also all HD programmes are natively output in 1080i on the EPG.

Garth Man:annoying thing about Sky though is that at least half their channels are just upscaled, not actually filmed in HD.....

There are certain programmes that are upscaled, but i wouldn't say that half the channels are upscaled.

All of the HD channels currently on the EPG show actual HD programmes at some stage during the day.

The EPG will indicate (with fairly good accuracy) what is in HD with the HD symbol on the information screen.

Sky+HD is broadcast @ 1080i or so I have read on various other forums.

So setting it to output @ 720p means that the box has to do the scaling.
IMHO leaving the Sky+HD to 1080i means that the box does not have to scale it.
IMHO most newish TV's would do a better job of any required scaling that the Sky+HD.

On a 720p panel I could not tell the difference between 720p or 1080i from the Sky+HD.
Now with a 1080p panel and Sky+HD I was surprised that 1080i looks so much sharper than 720p (most noticeable viewing text in the new epg).
So for me its 1080i on my Sky+HD all the time.

My 1080p Panny is definitely clearer with the Sky box set to 1080i. I watched the proms and you could pick up much more detail in the audience etc.

I also think that a good lead is better than a cheap one. I look at test results rather than gut feeling and when measured properly it is easy to demonstrate that digital signals over an analogue cable can be degraded. It seems that WHF make a subjective assessment based upon looks and sound when using a particular lead which is quite a good measure but it would be interesting to see some actual measurements.

arent hdmi cables digital cables? if so, isnt what happens with analogue ones irrelevant?
