Does setting a Denon DVD 1940's HDMI output to either 720p or 1080p actually give you a progressive scan output on your dislay or do you actually have to connect the DVD player and TV with Component leads to ensure a progressive scan output on your TV?

Finally, which is better HDMI or Component for best picture quality?

your screen should alter the picture (whatever format you send it in) to its native resolution. if its a 1940 set it to 720p and stick with the HDMI, it does audio as well.

1080p and 720p are progressive scans (that's what the p stands for). HDMI will give you that and as BigJ says, it's a one cable for picture and sound where the component will need audio cable as well to do the same job. No brainer.
