With HD-DVD there is no regional codes so you can buy your movies from anywhere and they will play.

With BD software the world is split into 3 regions

Region A Blu-ray - North America, South America, East Asia except for China

Region B Blu-ray - Europe and Africa

Region C Blu-ray - China, Russia and other countries

As of yet hardly ant BD movies have actually had any regional codeing placed on them buy the studios but expect this to chang when or if the format gathers popularity.

Not yet apparently. Although, the general consensus seems to be that once the format (whichever one wins out in the end) takes off, they will be regionally encoded. These regions are not the same as DVD regions, however. Not sure of all the details. I think other posters have some more info on this.

I see DJ got there before me!

D.J.Krime,

Thanks a lot for the info. Lets hope when the studios start to apply region coding to movies they don't restrict features for one region in favor of another... (some hope)

Yes I think that is a bit hopefull, We bound to end up with differnt versions of films on either side of the pond and when they do implement regional codeing I personally worry that even if/when the studios do implement region codeing that if your player has been moded to alow multiregion playback that with special features that require Internet access they will know you are not in the correct region and stop you from accessing those features.

Hate to tell you, but there already ARE differences between US and UK HD discs.

For example, the US HD DVD of King Kong is superior to the UK version - much better transfer. We've noticed this, as have several display manufacturers when choosing discs to demo at shows etc....

Watch for different features and/or sound formats on US/UK HD discs, too.

So who's winning this format war then? I'm keen to get an HD source other than Sky but don't want to buy a component that will be obselete in a few years / months. It seems that far more Blu-ray movies are being sold than HD DVD in the UK but I read somewhere that the Japanese market is leaning towards HD-DVD. I would have thought that the PS3 would have done more damage to HD DVD than it seems to have done. Also from what I can gather Blu-ray movies are coming with lossless sound, whereas HD DVD is still compressing the sound files. Any ideas? It would be nice to know what other major differences there are between the 2 formats other than the various film studios that have signed up to 1 or other.

If one format ever "loses" there will be tonnes of cheap HD movies in that format going so I wouldn't say that investing in a standalone player is going to be a waste of money. At the end of the day you will still have the movie experience that you wanted.

I tend to favour the idea that they will co-exist side by side for a considerable time.

A worrying fact about BD and HD-DVD releases thus far for true movie fans is that the studios have not cared about the consumer and have often released a version of the movie that is inferiour to its DVD version. For example the HD version of "RAMBO- FIRST BLOOD" is only marginally better picture and sound wise over its DVD sibling but features the edited "R RATED" version of the movie rather than the full unrated cut of the movie that is on DVD.

The same goes for the Anchorbay BD release of the calssic "DAWN OF THE DEAD" being the US Theatrical cut of the movie as where if you get the lovely US box set, you get all 3 cuts of the movie. I thought the idea of BD and HD-DVD was a progressive one from DVD but if the studios are going to keep releasing duff discs they why bother changing from DVD?

I for one like many true movie fans, could not care less about the latest installment of "The Fast and Furious" but have enjoyed with DVD being to look at DVD's from around the world to be able to get the best version avalible of my chosen movie. I love Horror movies and could not imagine having to put up with say the English cut of Cannibal Holocaust missing over 8mins compared to the full version I have,

Maybe I am missing the point and BD and HD-DVD are not aimed at a true movie fan but simply at the masses who wish to watch the latest pap dished out by Hollywood.

DJ Krime is right, as usual.
At the moment - as DVD itself was initially - most of the HD/BD discs around are recent studio releases. There are a few Technicolor classics around (The Searchers, Adventures of Robin Hood, Singin' In the Rain) and the odd Indie (Pan's Labyrinth, and the aforementioned not too good version of the original Dawn of The Dead) but if your taste runs to Gialli, Guinea Pig or the more 'specialist' genres (too many g's there) then you're best hanging on and enjoying the delights of SD. Even if it is on a dodgy DVD-R.....
This is a volume business. And while mastering costs are so high and there's no economy of scale, rights holders are only going to go for titles where there's the real prospect of return. And a quick one, at that. They need to move units, and that's not going to happen on niche titles until the format (whichever one wins out) takes hold.
And don't get me started on why discs are TWICE THE PRICE in the UK when compared to the US.....
One bit of good news on the region coding thing, Yes, it'll come in (again once there's a significant critical mass to deal with, and it's already started) but at the moment, enjoy the freedom!
Movietyme, a site I use a lot to buy DVDs, lists the non region free BD titles available on BluRay. Check out http://www.movietyme.com/catalog/default.php?cPath=323&osCsid=64614e9dde4346fc177d97821fc5ad88.

Having just bought a sony bd 300 player , I was keen to build up some blu-ray discs and have fallen at the first hurdle, as I thought that all BDs were on one region, namely B.

Seems I now have an unplayable Region A disc set of David Gilmour.

Been checking www and have found no reference to regions until I found your forum. I am annoyed as it should be out there and, unusually a music BD dvd has a region code which regular dvds dont have (usually all regions).

What are they trying to protect as they are copy proof. It can only be anti - free market. I thought we had killed this one before!

Do you think I have any recourse against Sony(for not pointing this out and Amazon.co.uk(advert said region 1)?

I doubt you have any grounds against either Sony or Amazon. Sony is not at fault for you buying an overseas disc, and all discs that are region encoded will say the region on the case somewhere.

Amazon did warn you buy stating "region 1", even though they have used the wrong terminology this is still a warning that it is not a region B disc and you should check that the disc is compatible before purchasing.

I might be wrong, but I believe the region codes were brought in on DVD's partly due to the fact that films were, and often still are released at different times throughout the world. I remember buying a few Region 1 films just as they were being released into the cinema over here, and they don't want to negatively effect the cinemas takings. Although I don't think the delay between releases is anywhere near as long as it used to be.

For me it's a question of whether or not Blu Ray or HD is actually significantly better than usuing a high quality DVD player to Upsacle standard DVD's and having seen Blu Ray in action I'm not going to rush out and buy a Blu ray player and spend crazy amounts of money on the Bly Ray Discs. Sure you get a bit of depth in the picture but that's really about it and I actually think the standard DVD of Casino Royale upscaled is better than it's Blu Ray equivalent comparing a DENON DVD 1940 Vs SONY BDPS300. For me at the moment Blu Ray produces a far too clynical picture and doesn't warrant the extra outlay of cash.

Moreover I'm very dubious about the quality of some of the transfers. It seems that in their quest to flood the market with Blu Ray and HD DVD the film producers are neglecting the need for taking time to produce 'that special transfer'.

You still see this going on with standard DVD's even today.Quite a lot of DVD's look no better than their VHS equivalent.

In terms of Quality Control I don't know if there is such a thing in the Industry when it comes to making DVDs , Blu ray and HD DVD's. If you're going to be paying around £20 for a Blu ray Disc then you need to be sure it's the real thing which is easier said than done , though the US produced Discs do appear to be much better than others but then again you have the problem of knowing whether or not it will play on your Player particularly as there are no multi region players available at the moment and many Discs will soon be become region encoded

Many thanks to FoxJA, this is an expensive learning curve as I thought that Blu-ray was region free - until I bought this disc. Trouble is that via Amazon(and possibly other sites) there is no mention of (proper) regional coding on their products and it is not publicised by Blu-ray, Sony etc. The mushroom theory applies. I would not have got a Blu-ray player if I had known. My dvd recorder upscales to 1080i and getting 1080p on the Blu-ray makes it hard to spot the difference

Despite my disgust with the whole Blu-Ray system, (search my other lengthy posts for details), I am surprised about your comments with Blu-Ray and HD-DVD image quality. I suspect you may have some player/cable/display issues. I have the classic Bullitt on HD and the picture quality is amazing.

I have a Pioneer DV989i 1080i upscaling DVD player, and whilst the upscaled picture is improved, it is still blatantly inferior to my Blu-Ray or HD-DVD images from the LG player. I hate the time Blu-Ray's take to load up, nearly 4 minutes on my SONY BDPS1 player for Disney's "Cars", with no indication that anything is actually happening, and if you try and scan or jump past all the movie previews, the disc locks-up and you have to start again! I have actually gone back to DVD's now where you insert, press play and sit down to watch.

There are a fair number of region coded Blu-Ray discs actually, and this is why I purchased a Region A/ Region 1 player, which I still keep with the Multi-Region 989i. Region A/1 discs have superior content, less censorship and are available cheaper and earlier.

I`ve said this before but I think HD-DVD is an altogether better format and I believe ONKYO are now releasing a player too so people have more choice than just Toshiba, can`t wait to read WHAT HIFI`S verdict when it comes out.Off now to watch my Transformers HD-DVD,merry christmas everyone.

Well for every person who thinks HD-DVD is better than Blu Ray you will find an equal number of people with the opposite opinion. Picture wise i would say they are equal. I have the Toshiba HD-A1 and the PS3 (x2). For me at least Blu Ray has superior specs including superior audio PCM and much more titles with DTS HD MA. I am planning on investing in either the Pioneer Elite or Denon Blu Ray Player which I am sure will be superior to the ONKYO which is a rebadged Toshiba after all.

I too am thinking of buying the Denon blu-ray player mate,if it`s any good of course,or maybe the pioneer, not because I think blu-ray is better, heard of many problems with blu-ray,but just so I have access to films only on blu-ray as wel as using my trusty Toshiba HD-EP30.As for the Onkyo HD-DVD player being a"rebadged Toshiba",I think you`re wrong my friend,a company with a reputation like they now have would surely manafacture a totally new model.Maybe WHAT HIFI know more. Also to WHAT HIFI,are Toshiba and Onkyo still the only 2 manafacturers to get behind HD-DVD?I`m sure there were more when I first read of the new"format war"sometime at the end of 2006 I think it was.Hope everyone had a good xmas by the way,I watched Transformers on HD-DVD,absolutely stunning.

There are pictures of the Toshiba XE1 and the new Onkyo's innards and they appear to be the same, which is where the comments on them being identical are coming from. If you download the manuals from the respective websites, they are pretty much identical too bar the front cover.

Toshiba used to own Onkyo and Onkyo still supply speaker units to Toshiba for their TV units. Their colaboration continues to this day.

Agreed Onkyo makes components including drive units for a number of manufacturers, but I can see nothing in the corporate history to suggest the company has ever been owned by Toshiba, and it's not something of which I was aware. Can you elucidate please?

Correct. There was a picture of the inside of the Onkyo and its the same as the Toshiba.

Exactly. I bet there is not a soul in the universe who could tell the pictures apart. That is why I have been saying that it makes no difference what people think is the better format. We will all end up with dual format players - hopefully ones that have not been released before their time.

Try also www.dvdworldusa.com for the latest on what discs play in which region.
