Linn Sales last year was 16 million pounds......

so 6 million dollars in sales is not bad going for a start up.

That is an interesting point. But you have to compare 16m in sales from a company nobody has heard of (relatively) compared to 4m (rough exchange rate) from a venture that has been touted on Letterman, with nebulous benefits that have not been explained very well.

The thing is, we don't need a new player, music store or resolution to achieve his aim, we just need to get people to master the music better (see also: differently). Apple have tried it with Mastered for iTunes, but still nobody knows what that is. If somebody wants to come up with a new means of music delivery, I'd rather have 24 tracks on a bluray that I can master myself...

might want to tell that to all the hifi companies who seem to manage to release a new form of playing device every year ;)

SACD, HD-DVD, DVD-A...what a success they've been.

True, even though I didn't actually mean that. You say there's no need for another player but over 18 thousand people disagree. My point was that every year hifi manufacturers release the same thing, either slightly "upgraded" or a different fascia or logo and people don't bat an eyelid. the second somebody new comes on the scene to release something else, all of a sudden everybody is like "we don't need this new thing"... just smacks of hypocrisy is all. (no offence btw)

I think it's slightly more likely that over 18,000 people thought "OMGIfuckingloveNeilYoung, ifhesaysit'strueitmustbeSCHAMAZING* andifIponyupenoughmoneyImightevengettomeethimeventhoughIknowdeepdownIneverwill".

18,000 isn't a big deal.

*I'm reasonably sure this is exactly how Neil Young fans talk BTW....

Whilst I do agree, 18 thousand is crap sight more than people on here who disagree that it's not needed. who are we to say they are wrong?

My main hope is that it drives a market for less loudness, and as I said before, if that's one of the aims, surely we should all be backing it shouldn't we, instead of constantly bitching about how badly things are being compressed at the moment whilst not actually doing anything about it?

None taken. Though I've thought "we don't need no stinkin' new thing" about all of the above (the 'advantages' of multichannel music aside), and that I agree wholeheartedly that the improvements claimed by magazines of new models (of anything) every year are somewhat overstated.

I also agree with others' assertion that 18,000 people is *nothing*, in the scheme of things.

The Pono lives and dies buy how much music is a available to download in hi-res. I love the big names like The Beatles, Slipknot, Bob Marley, Nine Inch Nails and Mussorgsky but I also love a lot of underground names that very few people have ever heard of Like folk band Vanish Valley or Blues singer Mr Henry and much more and If there is not much choice of music other than the big names on the hi-res music downloading sites then there is no point of owning a Pono since I will not be able to load it with a lot of music that I love. The hi-res music sites need a huge cataloge of all genres of music to keep people interested in the Pono for more than 5 minutes other wise it fails.

iPods have mediocre sound. In the last 7 years Apple have regressively inserted inferior dacs into their players. So for sound, I can almost guarantee the Pono will sound miles better.

Not so sure that pans out in practice. My 3rd gen Touch is about three years old, maybe four, but sounds excellent. No issues whatsoever. I hear the same about the DACs but I don't the Pono will sound great simply by being what it is.

Of arguably greater interest is the development of octo-core mobile phones, many of which will carry Mediatek's latest 24/192 onboard DAC. That'll slip under the radar but the phone are available (see Cubot on the web).

I've had the 3rd gen Touch, and hand on heart, my older iPod mini 'square' version sounded better. BTW my 3rd gen Touch is bricked as, after letting it gather dust for a year, iTunes forced an upgrade to iOS 5 which put it into cardiac arrest, and the local Apple store could not help at all.
