Hi all,

This program looks interesting but I haven't had the chance to try it out yet because I'm away from my home computer and stuck using an ancient Windows XP laptop which can't run it.

Has anybody tried JPlay yet? How does the sound quality compare to Windows Media Player?

The link to JPlay is in the article http://www.jplay.eu/ .

I've just briefly compared the demo version of JPlay with my usual music player, Foobar2000 + ASIO output plug-in, using the song Polyrhythm by Perfume. I'm certain JPlay sounds no worse than Foobar2000, and JPlay seems to sound a touch more vivid and focussed but I couldn't swear to it. Similarly, JPlay seemed to sound better with WASAPI than with kernel streaming but I can't be sure.

Don't let my impression put you off: my hearing isn't what it used to be, so do try it for yourself. Please make sure that whatever free program you are using is optimised for your system: on my PC Foobar2000 sounds a lot better with its ASIO or WASAPI plug-ins than in its standard form.

The lack of library management is a bit of a killer. Tried to figure out how to configure it as an external player but lost interest after 10 minutes. Definitely sounds like something to keep an eye on though. If only it could be controlled by an iphone app...

I've had time to try it out more. Excellent sound quality, really good.

But occasionally the sound cuts out, not sure why. I have tried increasing buffer to 1024, kernel mode, dedicated processor.

JRiver Media Center has always done that to me too - the reason I've never bought it.

Just realised that it cuts out because it is a trial version, doh!
