hi everyone,
can anyone tell why I have grain, or noise , on many(not all), of my blu rays. its worse in the darker areas. i have tried to change my player. The difference between the live hd broadcast on my telly and some of my bluray films, is very noticeable. if anyone has an answer, i would really appreciate it. many thanks. peter

There's a number of possible reasons
- the sharpness/contrast is worth adjusting, and depending on your TV model/set up can be set by input.
- also try turning off any processing options on the hdmi input.

Questions:
Is your TV a new 4k one? Or an old HD Ready one
- if the former and your bluray player is as well, one or other is upscaling to 4k. Try to change which one is doing the uupscaling. If your TV is an old HD ready one, then the downscaling to 720p may be mulching the hd image.

It could be something as simple as the hdmi cable. If you've got a lovely new 4k bluray player and a shiny 4k TV, but you're using some old hdmi cable it may be degrading the image. If you've got another hdmi cable, try that (borrow one of you haven't)
- if that works, use a better cable...

Hi,
I have taken on board all of your suggestions and thank you. i have reasonably old tech. my tv is a sony bravia (1080p) from 2010 and my blu ray player is from 2012. both are hdmi 1.4a. My cables are compatible up to 4k. 18 gigabits per second bandwidth. i was told when i bought the cables that they were backwards compatible.

This is the strange thing about my problem. the grain does not occur on all blu rays and even stranger, it changes scene by scene. I am currently watching the entire series of the remake of battlestar galactica on blu ray (hd) and one scene can have so much grain on it, that its worse than a standard dvd and then the next scene, its perfectly clear and of hd quality. Then i switch to the film gravity and no grain, or fuzz at all.

i even changed my blu ray player for a higher spec pioneer and the problem remains. very odd. scratching my head.

Does your BDP / TV support HDR?
And what are the exact models of your TV / BDP?

When you say modified - is that chipped to accept them?

BTW: is the issue with grain only on certain region DVD/BD is it?
I bought the bdp from a company that specialises in multi region devices. I dont know what processes they use. But i do know that they have a very good reputation. i follow them on ebay and they have over 5000 transactions and 100 percent feedback. i needed multi region, because many of my dvds come from the usa, as i cant get them here.

The problem with grain is on uk, as well as other regions.

Actually, thinking about it, I've got a slightly older Sony KDL screen (only a 32")
Things to try (as settings are input specific):
1. Plug the HDMI cable from your BDP into the other HDMI socket
- will identify if there's an issue with the socket or a problem with the picture settings on the input
2. Make sure Picture mode on the input is set to "Cinema" - not dynamic or vivid, or something
3, Set Noise reduction off/minimum for the input
4. Check the "Advanced settings" for the input - what are Advanced Contrast Enhancer and Live Colour set to
- BTW, if you can't see these, it means your picture settings are set to "Vivid"
5. Is "Film mode" set to Auto? (can't remember where you set this - turn it off it is. (think it's in "Features"
6. What is Video/Photo set to? Set it to Video.(in Features)

Also - on the Pioneer, check the picture settings...
- Make sure it's set to 16:9 / 1080p output
- Color space - see if swapping between YCbCr [444] and YCbCr 422 makes a difference (think 422 is the default)
- Also Pioneer defaults to optimisations for a Plasma screen (wants to work with a Pioneer Kuro...) - set it to LCD?
- actually, there's probably a 1080/24 setting somewhere, worth trying as the Sony supports it (stops 1080/60 being sent)
- and there's a pure cinema setting on the Pioneer, somewhere, worth trying

np - it's annoying when things like this happen and you end up tearing your hair out trying to sort it out on your own.

hi again,

I have had some partial success. putting the picture setting to cinema, did a great job in reducing the grain effect. i also turn off the noise reduction. on the bdp, i had rgb on for the colour, so put it back on its default YCbCr422. so thank you for your advice. I say partial success, because i am not used to watching films in cinema mode. I will have to get used to the fact that there is now very little backlight, colour and brightness. cinema mode turned the backlight to 2, the colour to 50 percent and the brightness to 50 percent. i guess that why they call it cinema mode.

anyway. job done and thanks again

Great to hear! (sure I typed that first time...)

You should be able to tweak up the back light and the brightness...
- if not, there should be a custom/user
- set that to match cinema and then tweak the settings.

HI,

I have tweaked the settings to my liking.

By the way. I am about to take the plunge. waiting for the january sales and then i will buy a 4k tv. I have good knowledge of the products out there. always on the what hifi website. but lack of funds has prevented me from buying a 4k tv. been saving for a while. i reckon now is as good a time as any. 4k streaming content is on the rise and the prices have come down dramatically over the last few years.

got my eye on a 49 inch samsung. cant stretch to an oled. i hear the hd to 4k upscaling is excellent. so i cant wait. my current tv has served me well. nearly 10 years. anyway, youre probably not interested. sorry to bother you. and thanks again
