I have a laptop, mp3 player and a walkman phone and Im looking to replace my sure e2c's with something a little more punchy and basey. Grados seem a nice choice. I have around 150 as a maximum, so this would include the sr60s, sr80s and possibly sr125s (i dont mind buying an adaptor). Which would be the best option?

If you think im a moron considering grados, then please, feel free to throw me some better suggestions.

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris,

How good is your soundcard on your laptop? If it`s decent you should find the sr60s would do the job. They`d certainly be good enough for your mp3 player and walkman phone. I`d normally say go for the best you can get but if you don`t have a good soundcard then you could even consider the sr60s for £70 and a headphone amp such as the Pro-ject Head Box MK11 for £73.36 from www.superfi.co.uk

Word of warning regarding grados, make sure you audition before buying. Many people find certain grado models uncomfortable and this could be important to you if you are listening on your laptop for hours on end.

Quick thought. Laptop, mp3 and walkman phone. If you`re on the move a lot you may want to consider noise-cancelling headphones.

I would agree with Chris. Are you aware that the Grados are open, so everyone around you will hear what you are listening to. I have a pair of the 60's but have never had a problem regarding wearing them, find them very comfortable.

I have SR80s and they are very comfortable. But as mentioned previously, they're open and everyone can hear (or be annoyed by) your music.

All very wise words, thanks for ur comments. They will be more for leisure listening, in my room at home and in my office (its a 1 man office). I wasnt full in favour of using the grados out in the open given how they look ha. If im being rele specific this is what I have:

Sony vaio s5xp (about 3-4 years old), W910i sony phone (just over a year old) and i mensioned MP3 in the assumption id pick up an ipod at some stage.

Survivor mention buying the best I can buy for my money, which would that be given my audio devices. Surely the sr80s are better than the 60s? Is burn in time important.

Thanks again,

Chris

If your laptop does have a decent soundcard then I`d say go for the sr80s for around £100. You get a little more bass with these. Quick bit of info the sr60s and 80s come with a mini plug with an 1/8 adapter whereas the sr125 have a 1/8 plug and I think you then need to buy the 1/4 adapter seperately (around £10).

About the comfort factor... thinking about it I believe grado may have put thicker ear cushions on some models fairly recently.
