Grados are going....

I've decided to trade-in the SR60is - they are a really good headphone but can't live with the forward nature. Looking for a nicely detailed headphone and has a touch of warmth to its presentation.

My budget is sub-£100 and not used very often, but looking for a stimulating sound minus the Cyrus-like grating.

Suggestions welcome.

So no takers then?

Alright, I'll pose the question differently. As an alternative to the Grados I've only really had Sennheiser PX100, so apart from a cheapo pair purchased for me from Curry's about 20 years ago, I've little buying experience of headphones. Those Sennheisers have long gone - killed by my daughter's scooter - but I did enjoy the warmth over the eerie accuracy of the SR60is. Can anyone make a suggestion?

Ta! pp

I'm looking to get some more headphones for use with my iPod. I currently use CX300-IIs but I can't seem to get on with in ear headphones. My shortlist is:-
Audio Techniks 555
AKG HD450
AKG HD 480 (noise cancelling)
I'll be doing some demoing this weekend hopefully.

Not my best area of expertise....what about something from Bose...at least they shouldn't grate!

Yup, perhaps my taste/hearing isn't as sophisticated as it should be. Simple person, simple needs...

JD, didn't you have/got the Sennheiser PX200? What are they like?

Definitely more about taste rather than sophistication, PP, since I'm as common as they come 😀 Just didn't sound like my experience with the 60s or 80s, that's all. I could understand from what you say how you might not get on with the 325s, which are very revealing, but there you go.

As far as Senns go, the PX200s aren't in the same ballpark, forget them and listen to Ms Newsome...

I'd consider the Sennheiser HD 380 pro (review here) - not as revealing as the Grados (which sounds like your problem - the Grados are simply revealing more than your ears like hearing!), but otherwise a great listen. Also closed-back, so they won't leak sound like the Grados.

Amazon have them for within your budget....

Yeah, having headphones so close to your ears just grates to me. I understand the appeal but the grados are definitely not for me. I'll check your suggestion out...

Thanks, Clare.

Just get the Sennheiser 650s. And a decent headphone Amp to go with it. May I suggest Schitt Asgard? For a lowly US $250, and I bet you it'll kick the Graham Slee's Ass. or as I've heard more politely in the forums: wipe the floor with it.

Seriously. Atleast go audition the Sennheiser 650s. It's got the more reserved sound I think you're looking for.

The Sennheiser 448s are good too.

Just stay away from the Sony MDR V6: unless you want to use them in the subway. they're sturdily enough built for that.

Hi PP, not sure if you`ve already taken the plunge but if not thought I`d run through a few things as I own a pair of `380`s. They are pretty good but you should be warned that they are very different sounding to the Grado`s. I know you are looking to change to get away from the Grado sound but I`m not sure if the Sennheiser`s would be too different? When I bought the 380`s I did so to cut down on sound leakage and they`re certainly a big improvement on the open backed phones I had previously. However, after using open backed for many years it did take me quite sometime to get used to closed back. If sound leakage isn`t an issue then maybe some other open backed would be best, just not Grado`s obviously.

Whilst saying all of that I should just point out two thing`s in the `380`s favour. Firstly the price has come down thirty pounds or so since they were first released a couple of years ago. Secondly, they don`t appear to benefit that much from a dedicated headphone amp so not a great problem if you are just using the headphone socket from your standard amp.

Let us know any developments.

That may or may not be the case, but I'm a little curious as to how you've arrived at that conclusion as per a previous post of yours you were asking advice on the Slee's as you couldn't audition them in the States.

And guys don`t forget the 650`s are in the £250-300 price bracket. PP`s not looking to go above £100.
