Hi All

Ive been looking around and reading some reviews and have looked at the Panasonic DMP-BDT500 or the Sony BDP-S790 both supposed to be around £300.

Looking at second hand as well and the Sony obviously only used to be around £150-£180 as the people who are selling have stated what they paid so WTF and also now both are sometimes over £400 or £500 WTF.

Are people just charging what the hell they want or what? What happened to manufacturers RRP... I also notice that the 790 is the only player not with a price on the sony website. On this very website tested at £200...

When things get discountinued sometimes they do go up in demand. My Pioneer is still selling for £350-£400 on eBay by shops even though people buy them for £75 on AV Forums!

RRP doesn't apply to second-hand sales. They're both discontinued and clearly in some demand, not sure why.

They're not discontinued are they?

Still available new in most places & the Sony was Player of the year 2013!

If they are gone, then can anyone recommend a new one for around the same price?

The sony BD player you mention is available for £120 or less & the Panasonic for less than £125 i suggest you shop about ive had mine since 2012 with no problems

Both Sony S790 and Panasonic BDT500 were launched in early 2012. Panasonic's replacement flagship is BDT700, while currently, BDP-S6200 is Sony's top model. I think Sony is going to announce its flagship player shortly.

I think you might want to check what you have stated cos that is NOT the case...

I challenge you to find one of either for under £250

I agree with bboss; the newer models must be worth considering,

but if you're desperate for a 790, RS has some clearence ones for about 130. Only 4 or 5 left around, I think

That is correct. Links for both Sony S790 and Panasonic BDT500:

Many thanks for the links, I will try and ring the shops and see if they will post to me.

Generally speaking I would normally look at the newer supposedly better units but the new sony 6200 is crap in comparisson to the 790, not equivalent at all and the new Panasonic is now £650!

Have you compared the 6200 with 790? In what way is it rubbish? For blu ray 1080p/24 pictures, I have not found any difference between players at different price points (and I have checked budget players to players costing up to £1000). Check AV Forums' reviews of blu ray players. They allude to the same thing.

Panasonic BDT700 is £549 and not £650. It's already available for £499 (gel has posted the link recently).

I do not think there's anything so special about the 790 to justify its relatively high price. Basically, opportunists are listing this player for a higher price because people like you will look at current What Hi Fi winner and ask for it.

Checked thhe links? NO...

First on leads to a 6200 and the 2nd is for a second hand one, and I refuse to pay more than the original new cost for one.

Only 1 HDMI and no optical digital out for a start which completely rules it out for me plus some software support (cant remember what) which the 790 has... Quite a difference really!

I fail to understand why you're bent on the Sony S790.

I'm not...

I just want a decent player with 2x hdmi and Digital Optical out, which seems too much to ask these days. I run all my sound through my DAC and stereo and I have a projector, thats why I need those connections.

Why any digital player would be made without a digital optical out is completely beyond comprehension!

All the older models are better, even the sales guys at richer sounds are saying the same. Newer models are more $$$ and you get less!

It's Sony BDP-S7200 that's Sony's flagship player, not 6000:

Seems like its not available till July and still only 1x hdmi and no Digital Optical out?

Which stereo is it? The only reason to have 2 HDMIs is if you want 3D and your AV receiver does not support it. Yes, it is true that older players offer better value for money as there's little to differentiate in performance. Look at the players I linked above, which have dual HDMIs (if you want that).

It's releasing end of May, and in shops by the first week of June.

There is a digital coaxial out.

2nd HDMI for a Projector

Don't have an AV receiver, I want to run it through my DAC as everything else runs through it. Doing a lot of streaming and Qobuz Flac etc through my PC as well and i'm determined to put it all together.

Just getting very annoyed with all the hurdles being put in place by manufacturers not considering the bigger picture, for example I have just bought a new Panasonic Smart and all the connections are straight outta the back which means I have had to buy loads of adaptors and angle connectors as it is mounted on the wall without these I could not plug anything into it. Unforgivably stupid on Panasonics part, this is the reason why PC monitors have been connected from the bottom since they went to flat screen format. It also means I have to completely remove it from the wall just to plug something in... BRAINDEAD
