Hi,

I have a pair of Gale 401 bookshelf speakers, that used to be paired with a Pioneer Tuner/Amp. I would like to be able to use them again, especially as they are unmarked and the speakers appear to undamaged. As the sound is not quite as I remember, perhaps because of modern techniques, I was wondering if the crossover networks need to be updated. If so is it possible and what would be the best units to go for? If not where could I get them re-furbished - if this is possible? Many thanks for any advice/help.

Welcome, JagMan (too cold to be polishing it today? ;) )

I think these are the people you need to talk to:-

Good luck with your fabulous speakers. A true classic.

:) Hi,

Many thanks to "nopiano" for the information. I am currently living in France, but visit the UK on a regular basis. When in the UK it is usually to the south coast and I was wondering if you know of another expert in either Dorset or Devon. Don't wish to upset you but we are currently enjoying warmer weather than the UK.

Regret I don't, as for literaly decades the folks at Wilmslow have been the leading experts that I know of. I suggest calling them ayway; you can always ask nicely if they know anyone else. However, good couriers would resolve this for you, surely? It is not a common skill so only the best survive!

Sadly there are only a relative handful of dealers in Devon, though I have had good service from the ones in Tiverton (Audio Destination) and Tavistock (Tavistock Audio). However, your requirement are very specialised. As a total guess, might Focal offer any type of service, as they makejust about every drive unit on the planet these days? Might be worth asking en francais?

Hi,

Many years ago I was at Oulton Park for the Easter meeting, which was cancelled due to snow but not before us marshals had taken on the drivers with snowballs. So cold weather and snow are not that unusual, regardless of what the "experts" say. Never mind it reached 20c today!!

I'll be in Bournemouth next month so hope to be able to get something sorted then. I have sent Wilmslow Audio an e-mail but have not heard from them so far.

Just been to check on the work required to bring the Gales back to full working order as advised by Wilmslow Audio, only to find that the drive units have now failed. Do you think that they are worth restoring or should I go for something completely new, and if so what do you suggest?

How much money will it take? They were a few hundred GBP in their day so I would think 500GBP might be worthwhile. But I'd research eBay used prices too, unless you have an irrational love for them!
