When i think that i did almost thirty years without changing much in the basic setup of a cd-based system, it makes me quite nostalgic in this chaotic transition time.

I used a logitech transporter with a nas for a couple of years, but the larger my digital collection grows, the more i return to the easy browsing of itunes on a mac via airplay. I'm only halfway into digitalising my cd's, and this time-consuming ripping thing starts to bother me, now that we have fantastic streaming sites like qobuz.com where i find half of my precious cd's, and many more on hand in the same lossless quality.

So, before i invest more time and money in some hardware i won't use anymore in 2013: Am i right to believe that a mac&dac&itunes - with an amarra-like enhancer - might be the most future proof system to combine a large lossless cd collection with streaming sites like qobuz?

unfortunately there is no such thing as future proofing. Especially from a hi fi point of view, otherwise they would never be able to sell anything new!

Go with what you want for now, and given you've spent the last 30 years enjoying music one way, there's no reason why what you set up with today won't last you another 30 years.

Been trying to find out what amarra does, and it looks as though it's just takes over the music player part of itunes to output bit perfect (plus adding it's own eq - herecy in some terms!) - something that foobar can do for free! so, might be worth checking out the free options before you decide to splash out.

Apple's profitteering with the iPhone 5/(ipad 4?) connector change suggests 'bait and switch' is their strategy, not 'future proof'. Just saying.

good point actually. You will be more resistant to upgrades and being forced to upgrade if you actually stay away from Apple and stick with standard flac/mp3 collections...
