Guys

I have the Fubar 2 USB DAC and was contemplating buying the Supplier upgrade. I am very happy with the sound at the moment but was wondering, has anybody any experience of this upgrade, and is it worthwhile?

Thanks

Hi Frank. I read your other thread and if you can get the Supplier for £80 odd pounds then I would. It adds a little of everything to the DAC, particularly soundstage, but that is on headphones where such is very noticeable. The two together have greater dynamics than the USB DAC inside my X-CANV8P. By that I mean the music is more alive and I get more goosebump moments and my foot taps more often.

Cheers for that idc,

Russ Andrews are doing an offer at the moment, i think its approx £77 which i think is reasonable for even a small improvement in SQ. I don't listen to any headphone music at the moment but plan on getting some Sennheiser cans for Xmas so this should help. I suppose, foe me one of the main goals is to make the music sound as "alive" as possible.

Thanks again for your feedback.

I can also recommend changing the standard OPA2604 opamp for an OPA2107AP (Just a few quid and very quick and easy to swap with no soldering. Get the DIP 8 version.)

This one is terribly expensive (£13 + P&P) compared to buying on ebay but you may prefer to play safe knowing you will get a genuine, brand new item.

You may have done this already.

Along with the dedicated 'Supplier' PS mentioned above of course.

Cheers Chebby

That's nothing really for an upgrade, i would rather play it safe. What kind of change can i expect with the above OPA2107AP?

Thanks

Yes, Chebby, how much of a difference does the opamp make? I forgot that 'mine' has the upgrade.

Frank, alive is just how I would describe the Firestone kit. OK, so there is other parts to my setup that make for the overall sound, but I feel that I am with the band in the studio as the music was being recorded. There is a level of presence I have not heard with any other setup. Thankfully, it is kind to poorly recorded music rather than rendering it unlistenable. Without the Firestone that was not there to the same extent.

I must admit, since changing my speaker cable back to Rumor 2, the sound has improved greatly so i think the Maplin cable was obviously not doing the Fubar justice. I find it hard to put my finger on exactly what is so good but i know i just want to listen for much much longer. This applies to all my music though, from Green Day, Foos etc to Massive attack. Surely this is the aim of a good system? You hear the word "Synergy" being used and i think this is appropriate for what i'm hearing now. I'm still open to such suggestions that can squeeze out all the performance possible though.

The up-rated opamp made things revealed a little more detail and was a bit smoother sounding.

The PS primarily gives more weight and impact to upper bass (my speakers don't do the really low stuff) and prevented complex or really 'busy' multi-instrumental music from going a bit 'soggy' in the louder/heavier moments. (Examples like Dub Side of the Moon or Kate Bush 'The Dreaming').

Graham_Thomas:Are the Fubar makers having a laugh with the name?

The range has gone all bland and grey from what I have seen. I love my Fubar with its picture of a cartoon dog that has been bonked on the head and the Supplier with a picture of a man in a radiation suit. Since it is red, but the rest of my kit is black and shades of grey it really stands out. I just know visitors are wanting to ask if there really is something radioactive in the box!

So I'm guessing they are, as FUBAR means something naughty from WW2.............

Graham_Thomas:Are the Fubar makers having a laugh with the name?

FUBAR was a description - commonly used by critics - of the quality of mp3 and iTunes downloads (vs CD).

Maybe not applicable now that downloads are commonly 256k and Spotify is 320k and many internet radio stations are 128k - 192k (or higher) rather than the 32k - 64k they used to be.

Once you know about the product you are never going to forget it's name which is handy in marketing terms.

Nope, sorry you've got me there GT. I think you are going to have to spell it out.

'Effed' up beyond all recognition.

Or

'Effed' up beyond any repair.

That would be Eubar. Anyway, what was it again about the Fubar that made you sell it and switch to the Beresford?

You are not going to make me spell out the 'F' word on the forum (and get myself banned)

I changed to the Beresford when I started needing optical as well as USB.

So Chebby

As i have the same speakers as you, the upgrade of Supplier and OPAMP would probably be a good idea?

Chebby, is there much sound difference/improvement with the Beresford over the Fubar or was it mainly for functionality reasons?

Excuse my ignorance Chebby, but is the replacement of the OPAMP a "plug and play" job or is there anything i need to be aware of?

Thanks

Just a quick update, i have upgraded the OPAMP to the recommended

OPA2107AP but it's a little too late to test fully. It was a 2 minute job to swap out. I will report my findings tomorrow after some decent listening.

Well after a good couple of hours listening this morning i have found the following:

Initially the new OPAMP seemed a little too laid back for my liking but after approx 30 mins things seemed to change. Whether it was just my speakers "warming up" or what i'm not sure. Anyway, the main improvement i noticed was in what i think is the midrange, i noticed the "music" and instruments more than ever before.Guitars and drums just seemed more present. I think there was even an improvement in the bass. Vocals remained very, very strong and detail was assured. Not that the vocals were not present or sufficient before, just that i found the whole sound more musical this time. I really enjoyed the listening experience more. Granted, i need to have some more listening sessions, but so far i'm very pleased, especially for £20 inc P+P.

Next plan of attack is to try the supplier upgrade me thinks!
