Freeview signal delay compared with analogue

I have just bought a new Pana TX-L19X10 for use in the kitchen. It's a great little set but when it's on at the same time as the analogue set in a nearby room I can clearly hear that the digital signal appears about 2.5 seconds later than the analogue one I then verified this by toggling between the same station on analogue and digital on the Pana.

Any logical explanation for this ?

Anybody got any rational explanation for this ? The signals come from the same station, and are received on the same aerial.

I think the delay is as a result of the encoding and processing prior to broadcasting the digital signal.

As Stereolad mentions, its down to all the processing involved with digital signals, i.e encoding by broadcaster and demuxing and decoding by the TV/STB itself.

See, or rather hear, also analogue FM radio vs DAB. I remember back in the early days of DAB one of the older Gramophone reviewers writing an extended piece on whether one could trust the Greenwich 'pips' any more, given that they were delayed on the digital transmission...

Yes indeed Andrew. Have on occasion heard the 'pips' on the bedroom radio and then the same pips a few seconds later on the kitchen radio as I went downstairs.

Ah no: that's because upstairs is marginally closer to the sun, and therefore time happens slightly earlier there than it does downstairs.

Ah yes, that's the obvious answer. So silly of me not to think that just that simple fact may cause a signal delay of about 2.5 seconds.

That must explain why the doorbell has just rung and the postman was still halfway up the drive when I got to the front door.
