So you'd be buying an HD TV anyway - therefore it's zero cost
will freesat offer all the freeview channels?.................... will existing PVRs be able to operate with freesat............and to be honest is there any reason to get freesat, i cant see any...........as usual sky will either cripple them or take them over...........i think its money making scheme by the folks running it............just my opinion
The channel line up is yet to be confirmed.

You will need a satellite connection and a PVR capable of working with the EPG. Since a Digital Terrestrial Television PVR has neither capability, it will not work. freesat PVRs are in development.

The whole point of freesat is that it is required for the switch off of analogue channels, many people can not receive Freeview, so the Government and the BBC will not allow it to fail. There is absolutely no chance of Sky owning freesat and Sky haven't managed to cripple Freeview, so I fail to see how they could do so with freesat.

Free HD. Plain and simple.
its not free......

you have to have a TV, a TV licence and then pay for a Dish, a box and an istallation in fact after paying all that you get freeview plus around 2 or 3 HD channels i would guess.................................................its just not worth it until the service is way better......but my guess is that the business will fail before that happens.....................leaving consumers who paid all that money nothing and the fat cats at the top a huge performace bonus.........................................you know its going to happen
As per the reply above, it may not be worth it to you, however I suspect you are in a Freeview area.

You are also forgetting that there are many homes that have an inactive Sky+ satellite installation (like me). These people have bought HD Ready TVs yet have no access to HD broadcasting (without buying back into Sky). I will be able to purchase a HD PVR and simply plug it into the existing satellite cabling, instant HD satellite. That's quite attractive to me and will be to many others (yes I know you can do it now, but you don't get an EPG).

As the marketing takes off I suspect that people will start to realise that they no longer need to be locked into Sky to receive and record satellite content, including HD. It will be interesting to watch what Sky do about it.

Again as per my reply above, the service can not fail due to the analogue switch off.

Apologies if this has already been covered, but can I just clarify:

If I have Sky HD, will I be able to receive Freesat with the same Sky dish, or will I need an extra one?

If you wish to replace your Sky HD box with a freesat HD PVR, then you should be able to simply swap the boxes.

If you are continuing with Sky HD then I don't see what freesat gives you in addition to Sky?

Yep, fair point. I wasn't sure whether or not Freesat will contain some BBC/ITV HD content unavailable on Sky, but if that's not the case then no worries.
Actually, I have only heard ITV HD content being discussed in the context of Freesat, for what worth......
I would be surprised if ITV HD wasn't on Sky, the Sky box will certainly pick it up, just like any old off-the-shelf HD receiver would. The channel isn't encrypted, so there isn't any reason I can see for Sky not to add it to their HD line-up. I can't see why ITV would want it to be exclusive to freesat either.
