Apologies if this has been asked before... but Just got Novembers What Hifi from Tescos that has the free THX Specs and before I start to calibrate my telly correctly (Sony KDL W4000 Cloudless model) am curious as to when you should calibrate the telly.

Do you calibrate it during the day time or the night time??? surely if you calibrate it thru the day it`s going to be far "brighter etc" when you watch it in the evening ...and vice a verser if you calibrate in the evening it`s going to look duller during the day!!!! does that make sense????

If you calibrate during the day time there will be more ambient light than there would at night. So your nice calibrated settings will look completely wrong if you use them at night time, far to much brightness/contrast.

What I did with my tv (Pany plasma) was to set up different settings on 3 of my tv's picture modes Eco,Normal and Cinema.
I calibrated Eco during the day time, for normal tv viewing, Eco mode on my tv adjusts the settings depending on the ambient light in the room so also works well at night time.
Normal was also set up in the day time but this was for playing PS3 games, the eco setings were a little bit dark for gaming so I used the Eco settings on Normal and tweaked by eye until I was happy.
Cinema was calibrated at night time with the lights down low for movie watching or late night tv viewing.

Ideally you want to calibrate your tv in the same conditions you watch your tv in. Thats were the different picture modes come in handy as you can have different settings for each picture mode.
