Can anybody help me here with some advice.I am about to buy my first pair of floorstanding speakers. They will sit on quite a thick deep pile carpet.Should I put a base of say, a slate tile down, for the spikes to sit on, or will the spikes be adequate into the carpet.Thanks for any tips.

Spikes aren't always adequate for a thick pile carpet - slate or some sort of slab is definitely recommended. Try the spikes first to see if you can get the speakers stable.

Hi Craig - I don't have thick pile carpet but I still prefer the sound of my floor-standers on slabs. A couple of concrete (or slate) slabs from B&Q won't set you back much at all.

Thanks for the replies David and ******. I presume that I would still keep the spikes on and not just lay the speakers on the plinth ?

Although TBH we've quite deep pile carpet in all our rooms and we have no issues what so ever with the speakers and spikes. If you press them down hard enough they should penetrate the weave of the carpet and underlay with no issues.

However I do agree with concrete slabs etc but for something that looks nicer; go to Tesco's and get a couple of stone-style cutting boards for c£10 each!

What are the benifits of a slab? Do you loose some bottom end weight, and gain some high frequency dBs? Thx

Thanks for the advice about the stone style cutting boatrds from Tesco.I'll get a couple of nice marble ones to keep the good lady happy.She is just getting used to the idea of my new hi-fi being the focus of her newly decorated main room !
