Well took your guys advised and thanks for helping and you know who you are.

Sent the RSFX rears back to sevenoaks and moved my Alumni from were the were from behind the sofa:

http://img443.imageshack.us/i/p1010180e.jpg/

And put one in the corner on the window side and the other on the other side wall, they are 90 degrees beside me, but set slightly back about 5 degrees, and about 2 foot above my head......

WOW Position is everything, It finally feels like I am in the movie, and get really envovled, and the wife... Tech hater, says she cant belive the difference,

and she goes on to say... that will teach me for rushing to set everything up. [:S]

I got to say, that even though I have diamond 9.1 for fronts, and the NEW Dali Vokal for centre, i am not hearing any sort of tonal mis-match.

Just thought I would share, as I have been trying to upgrade and buy stuff to make everything sound better, but all I had to do is, move stuff around, and buy a better centre. and listen to people and look on THX and Dolby for the new best speaker position.

Really ?

I thought it was understood that the rears were set at about ear level ?

If i'm wrong just go ahead and correct me as I too have my rears at about the same height.

Will they serve better any higher ?

Need to know now as you have me going

Glad to hear you've sorted everything out.

Sorry to hear you've sent the RSFX's back - if they'd been in oak, I might have made you an offer
emotion-1.gif

And I'm with FrankHarvey here - I would have tried them a little higher... I had my KEF rears at about 2m in my old room and they sounded great....

My problem was, That I was doing it myself, as the girlfriend does not like to get invovled.

Just went from dolby website that says around 2ft above ear level.

I think it sound 1000% times better than it did before anyway, plus they are in the wall now, and I am not filling in anymore holes..

Only lost £8.00 on the RSFX as Sevenoaks have been good and said I can return.

Ear level is sooooooo wrong

If you find Canada's original post you will find why he has moved his and suggestions for placement , short answer is surround speakers should be positioned at 90 to 110 deg to the listening position , 2-3ft above seated head height

Edit-Oh and Canada get a new girlfriend

Ear-level is not wrong per se - it all depends on distances. Ideally your surround speakers should all be place on the surface of a virtual sphere, centered on the listening position. In fact, some high-end speaker manufacturers (Meridian?) curve the fronts of their speakers to match a sphere (3m one I believe in their case). So, if your surround speakers can be placed far enough away, ear-level is absolutely fine. Some of us are not lucky enough to have huge living/listening rooms. My old house was a terrace and I had to have the rears very near the sofa. Canada has the same problem, from his photos. In that situation, to get sufficient distance from your listening position, the only choice is to raise the position of the speakers to redress the balance. Let's face it, no matter how good your speakers are, the surround effect is not going to work if the left rear is 30cm from your left ear....

I still have them here boxed and ready to go.

I paid 199.00 for them on ebay, new, plus postage, was trying to get my money back, but not going to happen if I put on ebay with their fees, so only option is to return, as cant sell on here either.

If you want I can give you my email address and let you know which sevenoaks they are going back to, and maybe you can buy them when they arrive.

They are walnut flavour

Good point on the arc setup as recommended by ITU http://www.soundstage.com/surrounded/surrounded200307.htm

I have a 6m x 6m dedicated listening room and its impossible to setup like that as the room is not big enough

This setup requires that all the speakers are the same type ( direct firing ) and no specifically designed centre speaker

A disadvantage is that this would put the listener in the centre of the room, the worst place to sit for bass

Another disadvantage is 4 rear speakers on stands .ITU do not give guidance as to 2ft above seating height but this is a well documented recommendation which comes with speaker manuals

As said on Canada's thread we are stuck with the rooms we have and have to compromise , that does not excuse poor set up common sense comes into play.

Here is a link with some good graphical presentation for real world positioning , remembering 2ft above seated head height

Hope everyone finds find this of interest

Glad your system sounds better!

I would have put them higher personally.....

Agreed, my KEFs are about 8ft above ear level and they are angled downwards slightly.

So they are on the ceiling?

3ft is sitting position up to my ears + 8ft would be my ceiling, bit to high for my liking, I think I could have moved them up another foot at the most, but TBH, the sound is amazing right now, and dont want to fill more holes.. LOL

Same as mine, & they sound awesome!

But yes, aesthetics should also be considered & too many holes will not look good. Canada16 is happy with the sound, let's not put more doubts in his mind.

Absolutely, enjoy. BTW they are just below the cornice, I live in an old Victorian terraced house with 12ft ceilings.

I HATE YOU GUYS!!!!

Just watching The Wolfman, and I can hear all the screams in my ear, and the speakers are as per THX and Dolby.

Thats it....... I am moving them another foot up and maybe 2 foot from the ceiling.

I hate filling holes and re-painting,

Well like I said after watching the wolfman yesterday, the sound it more direct than I like and want to move them up.

FOR THE FINAL TIME.

Would you say maybe 1-2 feet from the ceiling as per my link in the first post?

My wife is already freaking out about more holes,, Lol going to buy me some paint on the weekend

Cant look at thos pics in work, will check out when I get home.

Why does THX and Dolby advise 2 foot above ear level when it clearly does not work for most people.

Cheers

Had a look and I am going to put mine 1 foot below the ceiling.

Am going to put it were the stairs in that alcove start, that should be quite good.

Thanks for the advice, will get some trunking to hide the wires and paint and fill the holes.................. AGAIN!!

As I said earlier, THX /Dolby all say "2 ft above ear level pointing down" assuming your speakers are on a virtual sphere centered on you, with the front three also on the same sphere. If they're really close horizontally, you have to move them up vertically to push them back on to that sphere...

Good luck with the new and FINAL position!
