I need to sort out external storage. The 2nd hard drive on my PC is almost full. I was going to take this drive and buy another and put them both into this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hornettek-Enterprise-Enclosure-Capacity-Swappable/dp/B006ZLTI56/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1385041088&sr=8-2&keywords=nas+4+bay

That'd be my storage for the PC connected directly to the PC.

For networked storage there's a few options. Firstly I could go cheap and get this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/D-Link-ShareCenter-Network-Storage-Enclosure/dp/B008HNRD4I/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1385030579&sr=8-6&keywords=nas

That has 2 bays. Mixed reviews but they mostly seem software related.

Secondly:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Buffalo-Linkstation-Performance-Multimedia-Network/dp/B005BCU0DO/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1385030579&sr=8-16&keywords=nas

Also 2 bays but includes 6TB of storage. It's a couple of years old as well.

Lastly:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00BJ1BGB6/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&psc=1&s=computers#productDetails 4 bays.

New this year, reviewed ok but the priciest option.

Any opinions on those three NAS drives? I would use the NAS day-to-day and the Hornettek as my back up.

Does this solution sound ok?

another option would be the hp microserver http://www.amazon.co.uk/HP-704941-421-ProLiant-Server-Generation/dp/B00AHQUX86/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1385042632&sr=1-1&keywords=n54l

4 drive bays and more powerful than a standalone nas, so more flexible. You can also load the synology dsm software on it if you so wished.

I bought a Mediasonic HFR2-SU3S2 ProRaid 4 Bay External Hard Drive Enclosure (see Amazon) recently after a spate of hard disk failures caused by overheating mainly I think, although Is suspect the (cheap) RAID card might have had heat problems also. Too much inside one PC case being the overall culprit, I think.

189 Dollars plus S&H or, I'm guessing, about 150 Quid plus VAT in the UK. It's about 6 inches high x 5 inches wide x 7 or 8 inches deep with a plug-in DC power supply.

It's got a built-in RAID controller and E-SATA and USB3.0 connections, so will deliver up to 5GB/sec over the USB. You can add hard disks as you got building up from RAID1 all the way to RAID10. I've got four Western Digital Caviar Black 1-terabyte hard disks in a RAID10 (striped and mirrored) configuration giving 2 terabytes of storage. You could easily have much much more, however, with the right hard disks and depending on which level of RAID you opt for.
