I've currently got a Panasonic Blu-ray connected to a Denon 1507 avr via 5.1 analog output (no HDMI inputs on the Denon).

I've been thinking of replacing the bluray with a box capable of playing multitrack SA-CD, DVD-A, DVD-V etc

So am i better off spending my money on :-

1. a universal player similar to OPPO 95 / 105 (big money) and connect this box to my Denon 1507 via analog

or

2. replacing my bluray with an SA-CD capable bluray (something like Sony S790) and replacing my Denon with a new AVR and connect via HDMI.

Any thoughts ?

Thanks

I think getting a expensive amp is the way to go, some good deals can be had too. This is a good amp for the money:

You could use the decoding and processing in an oppo 105 and then feed analogue into your current amp.

If you are using any dsp in your current amp such as room correction etc then your converting the sound from analogue to digital again and thats not a good thing.

It probs makes more sense to feed a better av receiver via hdmi - there are a lot of options for £1k price of the oppo 105

I have a Pioneer SC-LX56 AV Receiver but recently replaced an Arcam 8SE SACD Player with an Oppo BDP105 which is mightily impressive and has played everything I've thrown at it, and has greatly increased my enjoyment of the wide range of music I play - from 60s pop, through Jazz and Military Bands to some lighter classics and electronic pop. The Pioneer is almost too customisable with options for playback, so I have questioned whether I needed such a piece of kit - which is rather short of analogue inputs when compared to the many digital ones it has. At present I'm enjoying playing music from a USB memory stick through the Oppo.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice and suggestions.

Would this alternative, cheaper amp be ok with the Denon blu-ray you've suggested. Can get these between £250 and £300 at the moment.

I personally wouldn't spend lots of money on a blu ray player if there is a cheaper model that does all the things you want it to, false economy in my opinion, spend the money on the receiver.

Thanks again. I do need SA-CD and DVD-A capabilities from my blu-ray. Not sure how cheap i can pick up a player that plays these formats.
