I've been searching for a good value second hand CD player to use in a system consisting of a NAD 3020e amplifier with Rogers LS4a speakers.

Worried about the future of CD, and as vinyl is currently my main audio source, I've been looking at second hand players costing less than £50.

My shortlist is currently:

Sony CDP-770
Marantz CD63 HDAM
Philips CD610
Sansui CD190
Philips CD624
Rotel RCD865

Any of your views are much appreciated!

I'd whittle that list down to three, the Marantz the Philips CD610 and the Rotel as they stand far above the rest.

Hi,

From my experience the marantz would be the most musical, I would go for the 63se or Ki for that extra smoothness and clarity.

Cheers,

Steve.

I'd add the Arcam Alpha 7 to your list though I can't comment on how well it would partner your NAD. I chose it over the CD63SE many years ago.

If you could get a KI-Sig then fair enough but for £50?

If you choose a Rotel, go with the 9 series. You can pick these up for around £80 and they sound really good. However, I wouldn't look at players that old; they won't last that long unless you can trace the history, and the only reasonable way that can be achieved purchasing via a dealer. They may know, but it's unlikely.

Personally, I'd certainly buy CDP as an ex-dem or s/hand from a high street retailer, only because you're guaranteed a warranty of some sort. When it comes to CDP's I usually buy brand new, because, comparatively speaking, they have so many moving parts, it worthwhile spending the extra and going the route mentioned.

If you want something new check out the Tangent cdp50 from Richer Sounds. 60 quid and its had some cracking reviews. No experience of it but a quick google will give you plenty of reviews,
