So Gregory came round this afternoon to put a Denon dl-110 on an Akito arm and install said arm from a Linn Basik to an Akito. He also drank beer and played prog rock.
The difference between the dl-110 and the previous K9 was very obvious, just a lot more enjoyable to listen to, the biggest difference for me being that it picks up far less surface noise than the K9.
We then put the arm in the Axis deck to see if it was much of an improvement. About 5 bars in to second song on Morrisey's Viva Hate we both agreed it was quite a significant improvement. Sound was a lot richer and more detailed, "frutier" as Gregory put it. It was a night and day difference. In comparison the Basik, which I really liked, sounded a bit thin. I think Gregory liked it to.
I might mess about a bit with DACs/headphone amps but as far as my main set up goes, Axis - Exposure - Kans, I know its going to be a long time before I think spending money on upgrading will be more important than buying more vinyl.
Gregory went away a Mozza fan and I think I might look for some Caravan on vinyl. Very nice to have a turntable specialist round the corner.
