Since this is kind of a Eversolo topic, might I say that the soon too be released Eversolo dac z10 is looking very interesting /impressive indeed, the specs, the tech, If I had some high end active speakers,ATC scm40a for example, this is exactly what I'd be looking for...I have the z8 dac and it's very impressive at it's price point. Although the z10 is near 2k I'm pretty sure it'll be competing with hifi Rose's RD160 at nearly 5k.

At that price range I would prefer Audiolab 9000N Play...

Why the obsession with optical when HDMI is available and more convenient?

Here's the thing with TVs too. I had an LG C1 TV connected to a Klipsch 600 soundbar, and connected a WiiM Mini via optical to the Klipsch. The LG had a Tidal app. And hand on heart streaming Tidal directly from the TV sounded definitely better than from the WiiM. Who knows why, but I used the WiiM for convenience, gapless etc.

Actually I may know why - the gain on either the WiiM or the Klipsch optical was too high, so I could have used the variable output from the WiiM, but then you lose bit perfect transmission, maybe it would have been worth it.
I was just stating that Mike would possibly hear what I've heard with hi-res downloads. No difference whatsoever. I just find hi-res a bit of a con, trying to get you to purchase the same music again, promising huge gains in reproduction quality, but failing miserably when compared to basic CD quality. I stopped purchasing them years ago.

Z8 is a great DAC indeed, somewhat anonymous, thanks to their streamer siblings, seriously consider combining the T8 transport with the Z10 if I were to upgrade?
Now that would be amazing!

Ps
Dual mono AKM chipset is interesting.

I would happily do a blind test one day to check if I can actually hear the difference 😁 But we're all different, f.g. my wife wouldn't hear the difference between $50 and $5000 speakers 🙈

If you compare Flac to DSD512 there is a difference but the improvements are not in line with what they're charging.

If there was a plethora of DSD available to everyone to download, perhaps the price of an album 😁 will come down.

For me it would be enough to be able to listen what Tidal offers at max, which is @24/192.
