I recently watched the Hans Zimmer live in Prague on Netflix and was totally blown away.

I want to watch a similar such concert live but not pay one million dollars.

What do you recommend?

Was that as a result of a recommendation very recently by me?

As a great show, I recommend the Blue Man Group.

@electro - I have been looking out for you :).

Hope Andrew doesn't mind the brief deviation from the thread but would be keen to know if you have any experience of the ECM 1 Streamer?

Happy to take it offline if you don't mind: dingle232 at yahoo.co.uk

Now back to the other 'Electro'......

Sorry for another interruption.
Interesting Paulq; the Electro streamer would probably be my first 'go to' if I moved away from Linn. As you know, will be waiting a month (or two) for the upgrade so it might be amazing when it returns. Apologies, I'll get out of the way now.

It's definitely mine Pedro2. Slightly tired of Linn's endless rip off 'upgrades' and am not sure I can countenance spending another £1800 (Katalyst) on a streamer that was £6500 new.

Right - I'm out the way too til I hear from Mr Electro. I sense a demo coming on.

I will answer here as Andrewjvt doesn't mind *smile* .

I haven't auditioned the new Electrocompaniet ECM1 streamer / Dac yet but hope to sometime soon, I have been wiped out by a recent larger than expected tax bill so all purchases are on hold at the moment.

Obviously I am a little biased when it comes to extolling the virtues of Electrocompaniet equipment being a huge fanboy, but my love of the brand comes from many years of experience and supreme satisfaction with sound and build quality.

I also like the fact that when Electrocompaniet build a product they engineer it to the best possible spec and performance and then leave it alone with no new 'upgraded' model changes every other year to make my equipment appear old and obsolete in the eyes of the buying public .

My AW180 monoblock amps have been in continuous production since 1994 with only relatively minor changes and they are still compared to some of the best power amplifiers in the world at any price !

I have been reading up about the ECM1 streamer / dac and it seems to do everything I need and more in a simple easy to understand fashion that is future proofed as much as possible with free automatic updates as they become available , a choice of 2.5" or 3.5" automatic play after installing internal storage of any size required for your Cd collection and downloads and the £2000 ECD2 dac built in, it can also be used as a pre amp with active speakers or in other systems, all you have to add is a external USB disc drive at around £20 to rip your discs.

For me the bit that tickles my senitive parts the most is the discrete class A analog output stage that is so important in achieving top class sound quality imo. *i-m_so_happy*

As soon as I try one I will let you know but for now here is the spec and some internal pictures to stimulate your interest. *biggrin*

Thanks Electro - look forward to hearing your thoughts about it. As far as I can see the only thing 'missing' is a phono stage but that can be added.

It certainly looks quality and future proofed.

@Electro, as you may recall I’ve always had more than a passing admiration for Electrocompaniet products, but they seem to have been plagued by distribution interruptions in the U.K. (The spin-off Abrahamsen seem to have been similarly intermittent).

I think I saw in another thread a link to Mackenzies, who seem to be a dealer, but does E actually have proper import, support and warranty here currently?

You have touched on the one possibly only Achilles heel of Electrocompaniet , the distribution in the UK.

Here is the current UK EC list .

http://www.electrocompaniet.no/where_to_buy/distributors_uk.html

And the rest of the world.

http://www.electrocompaniet.no/where_to_buy/

As you said distribution has been patchy in the UK along with the amount of dealers.

The way I see it is that Electrocompaniet equipment is too good and was too cheap although they seem to be catching up in price quite well now. *shok*

As I said on another thread Electrocompaniet engineer all their products to the best possible quality and strength they then leave it alone for many years without unnecessary changes or re labeling it as a " new improved " product because if it's impossible to make it any better they leave it as it is.

This is fantastic for current Electrocompaniet owners as they can own a latest model for many years and can rest assured they have the best available.

BUT it's a nightmare for potential distributors and dealers especially after the initial rush of new sales of Electrocompaniet have been made , the customers are so happy with their purchace they rarely bother to upgrade , this is compounded by the fact that they still own a current model , further to this Electrocompaniet equipment is so reliable it very rarely goes wrong.

So from a dealers point of view what is the point of stocking equipment that has a very slow turnover , they would rather stock a brand that changes models regularly that are so much bettter than the old one ( not ) in a shiny new box because they can't possibly be seen owning the old model so they convince themselves that they must trade in the old model for the new version, so the sales keep revolving.

Electrocompaniet have very good service in Norway and they will always service and repair all equipment from around the world , the downside is that you or the dealer might have to send it to them for repair, but the upside is that you will probably never need to send it back due to the superb reliability of the equipment.

At the end of the day the choice of ownership is yours , if you want top quality sublime sounding equipment from a no nonsence company that builds some of the best sounding and most respected equipment in the world then go for Electrocompaniet.

If you want endless rounds of box swapping and lusting after the next hugely improved new model every couple of years they maybe another brand would be better suited .*smile*

For more info talk to Mackenzie HiFi or the distributor listed who can give you the most up do date advice .

Or just go for it and be dammed , I did and couldn't be happier . *good*

I have booked a day off in a couple of weeks and am planning to pay Mackenzie a visit to demo the ECM1 with my own speakers.

I wasn't aware that Abrahamsen was a spin off from Electro - how does their stuff compare?

PS: @Electro - how well does the iOS app function?

Around 2004 Electrocompaniet had some financial problems probably because they were selling their products far too cheaply ( imo ) and they were bought out by a company called WestControl AS and founder Mikal Dreggevik took over the company because he could not see Norways most famous HiFi company dissapear.

Mikal is very hands on with Electrocompaniet because of his love of HiFi so he makes sure everything is as good and innovative as it can be, I have spoken to him a couple of times and he is very passionate about Electrocompaniet .

The connection with Abrahamsen Audio is that Per Abrahamsen was one of the original founders and designers of the Electrocompaniet amplifiers who after the takeover started his own small company making Abrahamen Amplifiers of a very similar design to the old Electrocompaniet amps, but has made the same mistake again of selling them too cheaply imo. They are very similar in design and sound to the older models from Electrocompaniet and do compare quite favorably especially in price comparison .

WestControl has extensive expertise in programming and digital hardware design developing and buiding prototypes for other companies in many different industries, so a simple digital audio interface would be childsplay to them I imagine.

I guess you will find out in a couple of weeks. *smile*

Hi Electro

What can you tell me about the Rena s1?

Not a lot but if it is designed and built like the classic range it will be very good indeed .

David F is the man to speak to about the Rena s1. *smile*
