I'm looking to upgrade my HiFi and am about to listen to a Cyrus 6SE and the Roksan Kandy Amp as recommended. I have a budget which will stretch to About £1k for speaker and will be listening to B&W 684's and 5's as well as PMC DB1i, Neat Motive 2, Roksan TR2.

Your own 'Best buy' are E Acoustic EB1's. Clearly I cannot listen to these in a showroom so my question is: can a £500 pair of speakers compete against others cost up to £1k? I realise that this is all a matter of individual appreciation, but what I'm trying to ask is at what price point above the EB1's makes the step up worthwhile?

Does the question make sense?

Any advice much appreciated,

Kevin Powell.

Hi Kevin. Your question makes perfect sense, at least to me.

I can't really overstate how impressive the EB1s are at the money. If I were you, I'd buy a pair - EB Acoustics quite properly offer a 30-day money-back guarantee - and then show up in as many dealers' demo rooms as you can. Hear them with the electronics you fancy, hear them against other speakers you might have on your shortlist, and make an informed decision that way. You can hopefully hear quite a few combinations in 30 days, and if you find a better way to spend your money then the EB1s can go back for a refund.

Let me know what you decide to do and how your demonstrations go.

Sorry to hi-jack your thread.... Just wondering if they have plans to add surround sound speakers to the range? Maybe some dipole/bipole surrounds, and a few different centre's and subs. I havn't heard the EB1's but from your review you do seem to get alot of speaker/sound quality for your money. A matching surround setup could give the big boys some serious competition, and probably in a different league for the the price.

I think i've read of a few products stuff like 'punches well above its weight', but i always want to know how much higher that is. would be good if you could give a rough idea rather than just price comparable options.

I'm not "one of the team" but if you can stretch to 1k, try to get to listen to the PMC TB2i's too. You may decide, like me, that 1k really is worth spending! A bit of haggling should get the price of them down to your target.

Thank you all for the input.

Simon: The EB's are that good!!!? Fair enough I will do as you suggest.

I've also put the PMC's on the list as well.

What I am going to do is listen to what's available at the local(ish) showrooms, pick a favourite and then have a final listen and take along the EB's for comparison. I'll let you all know what I decide.

Once again thank you all.
