eathernet cable how long is to long

''how long before sound quality suffers'' ?

No idea but I have a ten metre length of it running from the loft area (where my two lads and I game) which I use from time to time and can say that as yet there is no degradation of sound nor picture. 8)

Ethernet cable is for digital data transfer and is good for around 100m per section according to Wikipedia. Sound quality would be unaffected up to this point, but beyond that, I have no idea what music would sound like with data loss.

You get loud clicks and dropouts, but shouldn't be a problem upto 100m.

Over 100m, just stick a powered switch in line, and you're good for another 100m.

Many thanks guys  now all I have to do is install cable unseen by she who must be obeyed🙂

Why not use an ethernet over mains system? Much less cable to install, unless that is not a problem. Plenty of options available.

As mentioned there's a 100m limit on ethernet cable length, however the ethernet cable has no bearing on sound quality at all, so disabuse yourself of that notion right now. The cable isn't carrying audio, it's carrying data.

I wonder how long it will be until an 'audiophile' ethernet cable is produced, to reduce jitter an' all?

Doh!

and I was joking until I had a quick search and found the above.

I've left a comment for them, although I can guarantee it won't be published.

The big disadvantage with ethernet over mains, is the RF pollution it radiates.

Oh good grief, no people, control yourself, get some perspective. And set up a double blind study while you're at it...

Come on The_LHC - tell us here then... what did you write?

Ethernet cable length effects signal quality and throughput. As it is a fully digitised signal and assuming standard protocols are used, there will be automatic error correction and resending of corrupted / lost packets of data. The upshot of this is that sound quality won't degrade, but that throughput and continuity might - i.e. you'll get a stuttering soundstream if you're using an unbuffered stream. Shielding will increase the signal quality over an extended distance and use of CAT5e / CAT6 will improve bandwidth and speed of transmission, meaning that any lost/corrupted packets can be re-sent without any perceptible slowdown of transmission.

Ethernet over power (mains transmission) is possible, but causes RF backwash that can interfere with other radio signals - DAB radio is particularly impacted.

As for the "audiophile ethernet cable" :silenced:

Just told them they were charlatans and the cable made no difference. I would have said more but the foam was dripping onto the keyboard.

I'm with you on this one - can't they be reported to the ASA for the statements being made as this is a UK website...?

To be honest I think the prices charged for some HDMI's and digital interconnects from established Hi-Fi companies warrant that kind of response before those guys do. Did anyone actually prove the benefits of digital cable yet or is all evidence purely anecdotal or subjective?

This 'paper'

http://www.mains-cables-r-us.co.uk/streaming-accessories/308-meicord-audiophile-ethernet-network-cables.html

is bog standard of the audiophile cable industry. Some flattering wordsa bout construction, a few measurements to show differences, no evidence that such a difference is causal with the sound quality change and then a sighted test full of bias. It is no wonder such papares are never submitted to peer review or any proper scientific scrutiny.

🙂 🙂 🙂 But they have put up some good reviews. 🙂 🙂 🙂
