My Blu Ray player (Panasonic BD35) with my 37" Panasonic Plasma gives me a picture not discernibly different from that with my Denon DVD player (upscaled.) Is this unusual? Should I be expecting more from Blu Ray, or is it that my screen size does not identify a difference? Could I have any help, pleae

If you have a 37" Panny Plasma then I do believe it is a 720p HD-Ready screen as they didn't make any 1080p 37" plasmas. At that resolution you are upconverting 576i video from DVD to 720p but you would also be performing a downconversion of the 1080P24 video from blu-ray to 720P25. This should be a bit of a leveller of the playing field. If you were watching on a 1080p screen of decent size for your viewing distance you should notice the difference.

Totally agree with you there

If the Denon is the 1940, I have to totally agree with you.

I had this and sold it and later bought the BD35. I miss the Denon so much I wish I'd never sold it!. To me on SD (DVD playback) it was far superior and on HD vs SD, it was so close as to be almost indisinguishable.

Not sure if thats a failing of the BD35 or praise for the 1940.

Agreed +1, as I had the same problem a year ago, until I replaced my Panasonic with a Sony 1080p LCD, what a difference.

The Denon DVD players give superb results. I still have mine although it has been put away since I bought a BD80 Bluray player. If I had enough connections on my TV I would be tempted to still use it for DVD, however the Panny is excellent on upscaled DVD.

Thank you to all of you who replied. My Panasonic claims to give 1080i resolution, and I have modified the default/company settings. Perhaps I should save for a bigger screen, but I shiould like to be sure that there are differences worth having. Perhaps also, my Denon is 'too good'!

Thanks Tom. My Panasonic does suggest that it is 1080i resolution, but I am not sure if that would be sufficiently HD for Blu Ray.

I have a Panasonic TH37PX70, which is a 720 set. I recently bought a Sony 360 BD player and have noticed the same as you. My old DVD player was a cheap Panasonic, which didn't upscale. That old DVD player vs the same film in Bluray played on my Sony is very different, the Bluray is much better. Tested it with Dark Night on DVD and Bluray

For me, as its a 37" screen I'm happy with the PQ on Bluray, and think the £120 investment in the BD player was worth it. The only thing I am confused about is what settings to have the BD player on, as well as my Humax Foxsat HDR. Either let the peripherals do the upscaling or let the TV.

Try it both ways and see which is best and which you prefer.

What do you mean by the resolution of the DVD........

Sorry but still don't follow...my Denon has HDMI settings for 480, 720 & 1080 and I set it on highest for watching DVD's, so surely this is the Denon doing the upscaling and passing that signal to the TV, and the TV isn't doing any upscaling or have I got it wrong? How do I know if the Denon is the doing the upscaling or the Pansonic TV is ?
