Im planning on buying a Pana DMR-EZ27 for copying from my SHY HD box as im on my 6th box in 18 months and im fed up of loosing unseen programmes What I want to know is ... When recording from SKY HD how much programming can I get onto one disc?? Will it vary between HD programmes and SD ? Im looking to copy Ross Kemp in Afganstan so my sis can watch it at her own leisure and not interupt my fottie viewing and was hoping to get it on 1 disc. cheers al

My friend has done the same (not sure he's got the exactly the same model as you, but I think so). As I remember when he was setting it up, there are four different recording modes and this determines how much you can get on the DVD disc. I think XP was uber quality, then SP was standard, LP which was okay and EP which was dreadful quality! Obviously the lower the quality, the more you can fit on one DVD (I think it went 1 hour for XP, 2 hours for SP, 4 hours for LP and 8 hours for EP). We tried it on an HD recording for Casino Royale. It obviously won't record the HD format (as it's coming in through SCART), but the upscaling still made it look pretty sharp on XP and SP. LP was okay - I'd say it was fine for the majority of TV programmes.

Hope this helps.

I know SKY can only broadcast in 1080i but this recorder can upscale to 1080p so does it therefore have an HDMI input/output? Am I being dumb? What is the max resolution a scart can cope with?

ok so i just had a look on Pana's website and this unit has a DV input (not sure what this is) and a HDMI output (for the upscaling im guessing)
when i copy on to a disc from SKY HD (1080i) will it upscale and burn to 1080p??

Was at my friend's house tonight and he does have the same model as you. Basically, the DV input is for camcorders, so not relevant for this. What you can do though is, take a Scart connection out of your Sky HD box and into the DVD recorder. The recorder can then record this input on to DVDs. Scart doesn't have the bandwidth that HDMI has, therefore your video will be in SD i.e. 576p I think as it's a PAL source rather than 1080i or 1080p, so the recording itself is done in SD (NB - this is the same resolution as a standard UK DVD, assuming you have it in XP or SP mode). However, when you play this DVD back on your DVD recorder, it will then upscale this to 1080i / 1080p etc. depending on how you've set this up.

When your sis plays this back, it will play back as a normal DVD, unless she also has an upscaling DVD player, in which case, this will also upscale the content for her screen. So basically, as long as you use XP or SP recording mode, it should look pretty decent on her screen. This is all based on what I saw when my friend tested it on an HD recording he had of Casino Royale on his Sky HD box. Your best bet is to get a re-writable disk and play around with it first so you can playback what you're recording and make sure it's of a reasonable quality.

[NB - I know all this works as I've seen my friend do it, but if I've got any of the figures wrong e.g. 576p, 1080i, 1080p - let us both know as I still get confused by this myself!]
