We've got a Sony dav-880 home cinema system. Would like to replace the DVD player with a DVD recorder/PVR. Other than get a DVD/PVR with built-in amp (are they more expensive?) how can we retain surround sound? Would we be able to use the dav-880 as an amp?

Thanks for any advice.

IIRC the SAV-S880 has an optical digital input, so all you need is a DVD recorder with an optical digital output - most have them, but check - to carry the audio between the two.

That will give you surround sound from your new recorder via the Sony system.

You could add an affordable PVR such as the 80GB Goodmans GHD8020F2 (£129) or a DVDR/HDD recorder such as the Panasonic DMR-EX77 (£300). But as Andrew says you'd need a digital output from the PVR/DVDR to feed surround sound into the Sony: the Pana has this, the Goodmans doesn't.
