I have a query. Is there any point buying a blu ray player which duplicates the technology inside your AV receiver.

I am looking at the new Denon BDP-1611 player, but also considering waiting for the BDP-2011. However from my research on the net the 2011 contains pretty much the same DACs, video chip etc as the Denon AVR-3311 that i have just ordered.

My question is would i be better getting the cheaper Blu Ray player (1611) and justing feeding it raw to my Av receiver and letting it do the work which in theory should achieve the same result as getting a player with all the bells and whistles?

Hi Tony

rather than the 2011 you`d better be off in my honest opinion with the new Oppo bdp-93 region free version for similar money

Tony a very good question. Which brings me to the reviews I have read. (not read any for some time). And also how your set up is connected and what is doing what.

My Amp is set to pass through the video and decodes the sound. even if I spent more on the player but kept the settings the same I dont believe I would notice any difference. But if I wired things up differently then maybe I might. but only on the sound..... (Can of worms).

Although it may seem that higher end models of Blu-ray players just include unnecessary duplicate technology that you may find in your amp (e.g. DACs etc. that you've mentioned), the upgraded components of a higher end model could include components which don't show up on a spec sheet. Best bet is to get a demo of the two players in the same showroom - watch one, then the other on the same screen, through the same amp and speakers with the same settings. Only then can you decide whether it's worth spending the extra on a higher end model.
