There's some great insight into Decca's approach in the documentary 'The Golden Ring'. You may already know it. It contains extracts of the famous first full studio recording of Wagners Ring. John Culshaw was the executive producer along side Gordon Parry and Jimmy Brown, who are mentioned in that article. Great watch, although the narration is a bit cringe, and you don't have to be into Wagner to appreciate the footage.

I've never heard of it but it does sound interesting. I'd like to see that.

A quick look on YouTube and I can't find it. Possibly a few clips but no sign of the whole documently. :(

Yeah just some snippets by the look of it.

The gain riding technique that's mentioned in that article is very interesting.

One of the first things one notices with a Decca orchestra is that the quieter subtle passages of a symphony etc tend to be quite forward and present.
Not at all recessed.
They don't play second fiddle to the more dramatic crescendo's.
I've always liked that.

EMI to my ears are the complete opposite. Particularly the more modern recordings.
A lot of the subtleties and nuances of the orchestra are inaudible at times and overly pasteurised in comparison.

Steve, great thread and playlist. Should probably be a sticky as difficult to find.

Would you say these two are worth adding to the playlist?

I must say I've heard him play that Polonaise even better but it isn't on Spotify and can't seem to find the album.

I'd say any Chopin is worth adding...!

I only have a girlfriend that's a trained classical pianist and she seems to favour mostly the impressionists: Debussy, Fourre,...

She does agree however that Bach needs to recieve credit as the greatest composer, just by starting the entire thing essentially...
