I'm not sure if this will be of interest to anyone here but I've created a 'Dummies guide to Classical Music' Spotify playlist.

Clicky

Rather than suggesting whole albums for you to try it's a compilation of all the best bits, many of which you'll recognise from TV adverts and films. It should (hopefully) be a more approachable and noob friendly way of discovering classical music. It starts off with a few slow pieces and picks up tempo later on so if you find it boring at first just skip forward a few tracks to the more upbeat pieces about a third of the way into the list.

Enjoy!

Well if you immediately feel the need to skip tracks, it's hardly a must listen to collection.

I do not agree steevee 1966, loads of classical is superb to listen to, a good load , not so, imo.

I really love classical music but just like with most other genres most of it is rubbish (or at least not to my taste). Even geniuses like Mozart and Beethoven wrote some stuff that was a bit meh. It's all about finding the good ones. Unfortunately Spotify's classical range is a bit limited so some of those recordngs/performances aren't the best which doesn't help.

Exact self same thoughts steve_1979.

When you manage to find the good stuff it can be really amazing though. Unfortunately Spotify's classical range is a bit limited so some of those recordngs/performances aren't the best available which doesn't help.

People have different tastes. Some like slow relaxing classical music where others prefer the epic grand overtures so I've tried to group the different styles together as much as possible.

Bit 'meh' sometimes mozart and beethoven are? I didnt know this? I would strongly recommend beethovens late string quartets..i like the dummies list..great music..looks like a classic fm playlist on any day! Cool...as i said before i started listening to rossini...i now compare conductors...very interesting how they view the music in front of them..and i must say since my kit is a little more insightful than it was..im re evaluating what i thought before..cool.

Some of their stuff is, yes (IMO). But they've also written some incredible masterpieces that are really brilliant. I think that Mozart is the greatest composer the world has ever seen but he's still human and had a few off days.

Thanks Steve and Vladimir for the links, they are exactly what I have been looking for !

I love a bit of classical music but know very little about it , I have added them to my playlist .

I still have memories from when I was a quite young being taken to see Swan Lake and shedding a flood of tears of joy throughout the performance, it was the most beautiful thing I had ever heard , I didn't care much for the dancing though. *biggrin* .

The version of Mozart's Requiem on the Amadaus movie soundtrack is really incredible.

One of my favorite releases on DG. It's a Requiem but nothing somber like for example Barber's Adagio For Strings.

That playlist has Swan Lake in there towards the end somewhere.

I had a listen to all the different versions available on Spotify and selected my favourite versions of each track. The only exception to this is Beethoven's 'Ode to Joy' from his 9th symphony where I've picked the short version from the film A Clockwork Orange. This is a cut down version that's less operatic than usual. It not the best version by far but it's more approachable and noob friendly than most.

When i got to fifty seems more off days than on days! Lol...that would be a good topic..who is the greatest composer? On the whole i think mozart may be the greatest? Possibly? My view is beethoven is the greatest..joint second are mahler and schubert..just my opinion..
