Hi all,

Probably a really dumb question, so aplogies in advance.

I've noticed when watching films in DTS-HD, if I select one of Yamaha's DSP programmes the on screen display only shows DTS ES/EX for the sound. However, when I choose straigh multi-surround processing it shows.... DTS-HD with DTS ES/EX shown below it.

My question is..... when selecting one of the DSP progammes on the amp, am I still hearing it in DTS-HD??? Just in case I select DTS-HD before watching the film and have a RXV-771 receiver.

As a side question if both are DTS-HD what's your preference - various DSP programme sound or straight processing?

Many thanks in advance!

Jonathan.

Depending on the soundfield chosen, they can bring out certain aspects of the soundfield - either the rear effect, dialogue, front soundfield, and so on. This is handy for some people I suppose, but that processing does come at a cost. Comparing DSP modes to straight HD, you do tend to find that the DSP processed signal lacks some bass definition and punch, as well as some weight sometimes. I think it all depends what your priorities are regaridng soundfields. To stay faithful, stick to straight, if you want it to sound how you want it to sound, feel free to experiment :)

Back when Yamaha was my weapon of choice, I used to use the Adventure mode, which brought the front sound effects up a little in the mix, and giving a larger front soundstage. I never thought I'd use any other mode, but then I realised I was missing some bass oomph and solidity, and went back to good ols standard. Never gone back since.
